802.1q Trunking *IS* Possible Tech Level: high Ownership: more than 1 year
Pros: In response to phreak's review, this Netgear GS108T does VLAN Trunking as with all other SmartSwitch series!
Cons: ... Trunking VLAN's on Netgear SmartSwitch's isn't a one-click process as with other vendors. You need a better grasp of how 802.1q works. ... You can only have up to 64 VLAN tags with this unit versus more powerful, true Layer-2 switches.

A bunch of features you'll never need & missing features you'll wish you had. 1. No SSL or SSH support. Clear text authentication only to the device... SUCKS
2. Sure it states support for 802.1Q, however there is NO TRUNKING support. You'll literally need to uplink directly to each VLAN in order to Route. USELESS
3. Support is horrendous. I contacted tier 1 w/ my question & they had no idea what I was talking about. They referred me to Tier 2 which is PPI! I hung up, called again for biz services & spoke w/ someone who had a bit more knowledge th...

A Bang For Your Buck Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 month to 1 year This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: I use this as the core backbone for a rather large LAN party that I run every few months. In the time that I've had it, it's stood up to some pretty intense abuse. We've transferred terrabytes of data at rapid rates to and from the server from this thing, and it's never crapped out on us. Sturdy, well-built all around. Features are wonderful, and eas...

great for small business Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 week to 1 month This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: this is a great smart switch for a small business, it has 8 100/1000 ports.. supports VLANS, 802.1X Jumbo frames , SNMP IGMP Snooping etc and a nice web interface..
Cons: my biggest complaint is lack of POE (power over ethernet)
Other Thoughts: great for someone who needs all the stuff mentioned above, but ...

802.1q Vlan Trunking is not possible Tech Level: high Ownership: less than 1 day This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: It's a managed switch, lot of options. Web interface is reasonable.
Cons: 802.1q trunking is not a feature. Only one vlan may be assigned to a switchport at a time. For trunking to be possible, more than one vlan needs to be assignable to a single switchport. If your excited about the "vlan support" don't get your hopes up, I ca...

Runs cool Tech Level: somewhat high Ownership: 1 week to 1 month This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Very cool in operation. Silent (fanless) operation. Jumbo frames supported. Easy browser interface controls.
Cons: Minimal technical documentation.
Other Thoughts: Paired this unit with an older version Netgear GS108 without the "smart-switch" features. I get transfers of 37-50 MB/...

Excellent little switch + tons of features Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: Great little switch with tons of advanced features. Support of jumbo frames and Link Aggregation allows my NAS to be very fast when multiple computers are pulling large files at the same time.
Cons: If you do not understand advanced networking things might be a bit confusing to set up at first.
Other Thoughts: For the price I would highly recommend this switch to a...

great switch Tech Level: somewhat high Ownership: 1 month to 1 year This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: good management features, maybe overwhelming if you have little networking knowledge. it's constructed very well and should last for years.
Cons: odd placement of ports in the "front" of the switch. too bad there isn't an open source/third party management interface package available.
Other Th...

Good value for the dollar! Tech Level: somewhat high Ownership: 1 week to 1 month This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: You can't really find a better deal on an 8-port *managed* gigabit switch with all the features this one has. I paid more for an unmanaged 4-port gigabit switch less than 2 years ago, and THAT used to be considered a cheap price!
Cons: I bought 3 of these for my home network, and discovered I can't seem to get th...

Not to shabby Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 week to 1 month This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: SNMP v1/v2c support VLANs (w/ 802.1q trunking) Great price to feature ratio No fans Low wattage 802.1x support
Cons: Latest firmware (3.x) provides a poor web interface. (Can't see the link speed, selection is just plain weird). Latest firmware (3.x) removes the telnet interface. [Netgear GS108T PROSAFE 8PORT 10/100/1000 ENET review by N/A can be read at Newegg.com] | | Newegg.com Rating: 8.0 |
