| D-Link DP-301P+ PRINT SERVER 1PT EXT 10/100 - UsedOther products by D-Link Mfg. Part #: DP-301P+ / UPC: 790069262579 Model: DP-301P+D-Link's Fast Ethernet print server is a compact device that attaches to a parallel printer. This device permits the printer to print files from a large number of users connected over a Fast Ethernet network. Designed to work with both PC and Macintosh, this pocket-sized device saves users cost by doing away with the need to equip every workstatio ...[More]n with a dedicated printer. Multiple computers can share a single printer; the print server queues users print files, allowing the printer to print them out in an orderly manner. Through the DP-301P+, users connected over a network who access the Internet, run Windows 95, 98, 2000 or NT, or run Unix, Linux or MacOS can print files transparently from the shared printer. At one end of the DP-301P+ is a 36-pin high-speed Centronics parallel port that plugs directly to the printer without any need for printer cable. On the other end of the DP-301P+ is a 10/100Mbps dual speed LAN port that connects to either an Ethernet or Fast Ethernet network. This LAN port auto-detects the speed of the network (10Mbps or 100Mbps) and adjusts itself accordingly. This single-port print server is cost-effective and most suitable for a SOHO network. However, large workgroups with printers spread around in different locations can also benefit by setting up multiple DP-301P+ print servers. The DP-301P+ is easily configurable using any Internet web browser or a simple-to-operate GUI under Windows. Telnet support means that the administrator can also configure and maintain the print server from any station on a Unix or TCP/IP network. The print server's printer port uses the latest IEEE 1284 standard. This high-speed port, coupled with a large built-in RAM buffer, allows for fast printing and prevents congestion of print files on the network. In addition, the DP-301P+ supports HP's directional PJL protocol, allowing two-way communication between a management station and PJL-supported printers such as high-end HP laser printers. Users can consequently see printer status such as out of paper, low tone and paper jam from a remote place without having to walk over to the printer. Works Nicely Once Set-up - But Not Easy to Set Up I almost gave this unit 4 stars, but in thinking about it, it's still new on my network (2 days and has not yet stood the test of time) and the installation was not very easy.
This is nice hardware, but set-up is not intuitive and you have to adapt and improvise. It helps to be tech savvy (as other reviewers have pointed out.)
My first tip is that if you're on a machine with XP, go with the PS Admin program first to do most of your initial set up there.

Works on my network with win XP Pro and Win 98SE Works fine. set up three of them on my network. 3 XP Pro computes computers and one running Win 98SE. Need to change the defauld IP addresss on each additional DP-301P+ after you use the default ip address for the first one (using the web browser to access the units ). For win 98 you have to go read the manual on the CD (a .PDF file) for installing on win 98, and ME ect..and run the included software to install the print client for the network. On win XP all you have to do is set the IP add... [Read 's Complete Review for D-Link DP-301P+ PRINT SERVER 1PT EXT 10/100 at Amazon.com] |

Shares printers wireless/wired reliably. Not for digital pix Got this on sale cheap and put several printers onto wired ports on my Linksys WRT54G home WLAN. The quick-start info is all you need for setup. Works ok under Win XP Pro & Linux Fedora 3 provided printer is powered on before you need it; otherwise an incomplete file is sent and you get pages of garbage from Postscript printers at least. Windows gives useless feedback on print failures, so be prepared for frustration. Note: this has a Centronics-type connector not USB, so is slow for big (digit... Does the job, but... I upgraded to the 301p+ from my dead 101p+ and at first could not get it to work at all. I exchanged it (Amazon was GREAT, having mailed me a new one immediately without waiting for the return) and discovered I had the same problem with the replacement! I tried a Linksys substitute from Circuit City and finally got the idea that something was wrong here. To make a long story short, the problem is in the design of the body of the 303p+: it's thicker on one side than the other and on my Canon PIXM...
