If you like overkill... Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
Pros: 1. Flexibility of Storage. You can buy a smaller number of drives to start with and upgrade/expand down the road. Keep the same raid level if you can tho for an easier migration. 2. Protocols. Its AFP, NFS, CIFs/SAMBA, FTP, WebDisk (http) and Secure WebDisk). All of which give you flexibility. All in all, its solidly build and does what it says it can. They are providing firmware u...

Fast, but not for beginners Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: Lots of mods available. Runs at 600 MHz, but a simple jumper (JMP1) will get this running at 800 MHz. Speeds up the thing by about 10-20%.
Expect, under large stripes on RAID0 to get 50MB/s. Expect on RAID5 to get around 20-35 MB/s. Don't get cheap cables!
Works great with nfs and samba. Interface isn't snazzy, but workable. The user-created mods are fun. Link...

Very fast Tech Level: somewhat high Ownership: 1 day to 1 week This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: 1. Very fast - Using my gigabit network with jumbo packets enabled and SMB/CIFS (samba), I downloaded a 1080p WMVHD file from microsoft HD gallery and streamed it to 3 HTPC's simultaneously. Using standard DVD bitrates, I beleive I can serve probably 5-7 rooms at the same time. I backed up some of my personal DVD's to the unit and the b...

Worthless Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 day to 1 week This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Well crafted, physically attractive, quiet. Installation of drives takes seconds.
Cons: This could be a very long list, but I'll just hit the main points: 1. Intermittent problems with network mapping causing read/write failures 2. Rudimentary, crash-prone backup software. 3. Slow to inexistent support: email support never answe...

Good value for the expense Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
Pros: Very fast disk access and efficient utilization of the gbit network. Rebuild function works and will rebuild even when writing new information to the array. Recognises USB hard/flash drives as well as eSATA drives with ease. FTP and WebDisk functions work nicely.
Cons: Interface is... Different. Still haven't figured out some of the setup. Linux backend, but no telnet (afaik)...

Good now that the firmware works Tech Level: somewhat high Ownership: 1 month to 1 year This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Price. 5 Disks, many RAID modes, relatively simple setup. Physically easy to install drives. Great file transfer speeds and faster than most similar products. Raid 5 works well, even expanded the array without a problem. Support by email is good. Firmware updates to 2.0 have made the device a lot better and it is quite stable, has run for 100+ days. Bas...

Extremely flexible solution! Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
Pros: (Note: To get the absolute most of out this device, you must be willing to tinker, but it's pretty stellar even if you don't.) * Top of it's class performance. (Read the numerous reviews for yourself) * iSCSI Target so you can mount a drive locally instead of over the network, which is much faster! * Active directory integration (or NTLM) * Dynamic R...

Fast and Loud Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 week to 1 month This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: This box is well built and solid. It looks good sitting on the desk in my home office. I have it set up RAID5 with 5 x 500GB Seagate 7200.10 drives. It was quick and easy to set up, although the RAID build took overnight. The read speed is fast.
Cons: I'm not overly sensitive to case noise, but this thing is loud. The 92mm case fan isn...

Okay with new firmware Tech Level: somewhat high Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: Works dependably for file transfers with version 2 firmware. Easy to set up services.
Cons: No sftp or scp transfer. Built in web access not very good (e.g., can't transfer an entire folder). The connection when mounting an SMB/CIFS share to my Linux machine isn't stable. Documentation not very good. Their website is all Flash, which is blocked here at wo...

Be Afraid - Be Very Afraid Tech Level: somewhat high Ownership: 1 month to 1 year This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Would ge a great solution if it were truly reliable as a NAS.
Cons: Horrible tech support. Firmware & user interface needs work.
Other Thoughts: I began having problems after 4 months. Several firmware upgrades didn't help. Thecus advised to use reset button during lockups. Reset all paramaters - b...
