Pros: 1. Flexibility of Storage. You can buy a smaller number of drives to start with and upgrade/expand down the road. Keep the same raid level if you can tho for an easier migration.
2. Protocols. Its AFP, NFS, CIFs/SAMBA, FTP, WebDisk (http) and Secure WebDisk). All of which give you flexibility.

Fast, but not for beginners Tech Level: high
Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: Lots of mods available. Runs at 600 MHz, but a simple jumper (JMP1) will get this running at 800 MHz. Speeds up the thing by about 10-20%.
Expect, under large stripes on RAID0 to get 50MB/s. Expect on RAID5 to get around 20-35 MB/s. Don't get cheap cables!
Works great with nfs and samba. Interface isn't snazzy, but workable. The user-created mods are fun. Link...

Good value for the expense Tech Level: high

Pros: Very fast disk access and efficient utilization of the gbit network. Rebuild function works and will rebuild even when writing new information to the array. Recognises USB hard/flash drives as well as eSATA drives with ease. FTP and WebDisk functions work nicely.
Cons: Interface is... Different. Still haven't figured out some of the setup. Linux backend, but no telnet (afaik)...
