Helpful hint during install..... I'm using a cisco BEFSR41v2. The Buffalo linkstation said it had a good lock (2nd light from top, solid). The cisco router showed a good solid connection light. But try as I might, when running the software I kept getting a 'failure' to install from my desktop computer. Guess what I needed to do... Turn off the damn windows xp firewall. This time when I ran the program, it installed like a charm. Then I simply turned the firewall back on. That was all that was neede...

This thing WORKS!!!! For the past 3+ years, I had a Mirra which performed flawlessly until recently when the power module failed ( after the warranty expired of course). Since I was "up the creek", I decided to try this Buffalo. Received it yesterday, set it up in less than 30 minutes, and I'm really wowed by the ease of use and seamless performance. The Memeo software is working perfectly -- I had to download the Vista update today for my wife's new computer, but that too went perfectly. I have nothing but praise f...

a solid NAS drive For now I'm rating this with a 4 stars because I only have it for 2 weeks. If it proves to be reliable I will bump it up to 5 stars. So far so good though, I can get pretty good speed with my 100Mbps network. There are two USB ports in the back but you can't use it to connect to your computer. instead you can plug another external hard drive to it. then you can use the external usb drives for either backup or additional space. the buffalo box has built-in backup program, so you c...

Don't believe the hype you read here. The reviews here largely influenced my decision to purchase this NAS, but I am very disappointed. Data transfer rates are so slow that it can't be used as a fileserver over a network. Transferring 5GB from a connected USB device to the NAS took almost an hour - and I was not accessing anything else at the time (not that I could have anyway). It is decent for the money but it appears that if you want anything close to usable performance then you'll need to pony up at least twice this for somet...

It works, but... Tech Level: somewhat high Ownership: 1 week to 1 month This user purchased this item from Newegg.com
Pros: Gigabit network storage and very easy to install. Really didn't need to use their software. Just view your network places, find the drive and map the network directory.
Cons: The drive has restrictions in the network drive interface that I didn't know about. Database programs will not allow you to use the drive (outlook expres...

Disappointed that it does not appear to work with Mac "Time Machine" software I purchased this NAS drive last week with hopes to use it to backup the four Mac's I have here on my home network. All the Macs are running Mac OS X Leopard. However, out of the box it does not appear to work. I have set up the drive via the default instructions - but it is not recognized by the Time Machine software as a valid backup disk. I have also done a quick check of support forum and there may be a way to do it - but sounds complex. Looks like I may have to box it back up and return it t...

Only useful for LAN backups, not internet backups Note that the FTP implementation for the LinkStation does not support proper preservation of file timestamps, so every file copied to the unit via FTP is given the current date and time of writing.
This makes the unit useless for remote file backups, since the software I use (Beyond Compare and SyncBack SE) uses the timestamps to see what files have changed -- with the FTP copies and the flawed timestamp implementation (I believe it's the MDTM command at issue), ALL existing files co...

Excellent Performance Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 week to 1 month This user purchased this item from Newegg.com
Pros: Out performs all other NAS in it's price range. Very easy to configure / administor using web browser. Device is running Linux OS and serves files with Samba server. Very fast and stable. The unit itself is very compact (about the size of an external CD drive) and extremely quiet.
Cons: The built-in web server used for administration is ...

GREAT device! I've been looking for a Network-Based drive for a while now and have to say that this! was a great purchase. The device is very quiet, has a great web-based user interface, and it was *incredibly easy* to set up (even on a Mac)! -- If you're looking for a great network-attached drive, this is the one to get. It's even expandable with two USB ports on the back. If 500GB isn't enough, you can expand with other USB hard drives.
