Worth the price I went through a lot of camcorders before settling on a Sony. I bought a Hitachi DVD camcorder 1st because it was under $400 and you get what you pay for, the picture was not very clear, it had no light for dark rooms and the zoom wasn't that great. I returned it and decided if I wanted a good picture I need to be willing to pay more so I bought a $600 canon DVD camcorder and again I just was not happen with the picture quality. "Easy"...the way i actually wanted it this time! normally, i'd want the most manual controls, software for editing, etc. but, i just don't have the time for it any more. if i were going to get into moviemaking as a profession, yes. however, i wanted a easy-to-use cam that could take great INDOOR video. i finally moved up the chain to this DCR-DVD405 and am as pleased as i can be.
I didn't want to invest the time to upload video from a miniDV cam then have to spend time editing and burning to DVD so i decided on a miniDVD cam...

Great Camcorder I purchased this camcorder over a month ago and I've been extremely impressed with it's performance. The picture quality for both video and still pictures is top notch (I recommend using the HQ setting). The second performance mark that is exceptional is the sound quality, it's crystal clear and picks up sounds from 360 degrees.
I have only two complaints for this camcorder:

Tip for mac users I almost did not buy this camcorder due to a review here claiming it was difficult to use with a mac. Not so. A quick search at apple.com revealed several 3rd party programs that import video from dvd. I have been using one called DVDXDV and it works great, with no loss in video quality. It is very simple to use - I never even looked at the instructions. It does take a fair amount of computing time to import video, maybe 30 minutes for a 30 minute dvd. Excellent gadget for novices who use Windows... My sister had ordered this camcorder last week from an online retailer (Abe's of Maine) at a great price $580. She understands technology but she is not extremely savy about editing and handling manual controls in the camera. Very Pleased with this Camcorder Just got this camcorder last week after researching for about 2 weeks. Our MiniDV camcorder was on this blink and we decided it was time to jump to the MiniDVD format. Satisfaction Guaranteed... I bought this camera two weeks ago. Got a chance to record and review its performance indoor and out doors. So far I am very much pleased with the performance.
