A bit hot and expensive, but incredibly fast. Great drive. The WD Raptor WD740GD is simply put an insanely fast 10k RPM hard drive. Outside of even more expensive Ultra320 SCSI 15k RPM units, there isn't much that competes with it for pure speed. It does run a bit hot and at almost $3 per MB it's massively expensive, but for what this does you can't complain.

Speed anyone? So your building yourself a fast new computer, or upgrading an older one and want a fast hard drive...well turn away from those 7200 RPM drives and welcome the WD Raptor. This thing MOVES, whether its a simple windows bootup, locating files, virus scans, this is a monster drive in terms of speed. Western Digital is a well known quality hard drive maker, and they have done it again.
I've actually got 2 of these in whats called RAID 0, where Windows XP sees my 2 raptors as ONE drive, ...

Super fast in my G5 Added this drive as a second unit in my Power Mac G5. Installation was a snap, about 10 mins. Booted up and formatted it with Mac OS Extended Journaled in a minute or two.
Initially I have loaded all my Application Programs and what I call "Work in Progress" (client jobs).
I quickly saw how much faster programs ran, especially web browsing. Open and saves were faster too, with Photoshop, Quark and Illustrator.
There is some slight drive noise (clicking) when it is accessing app...

RAID! Yes they did make slightly more noise than slower drives, so I put a bigger fan in (now the fan is loudest). They suck up a little more power than slower drives too. Luckily I anticipated that and put in an enermax 550 supply. Im running two in raid 0, and I cant beleive how fast they are. If you have issue with noise (and we are not talking very much)I suggest you sound proof your case and GET SOME!!!!

Drive a QUAD four, it's good. I have dual RAID 0s the performance is the issue more than size but longevity of these discs is also important. The motors are strudy and the platters resistant to high spin wear. 5 years on a fast hard drive is unusual(HD accellerators last little over one year as my brother found out.) SCSI is no better in terms of durablity. a five year warrenty means confidence in a speedy drive.
