Just what the doctor ordered This is a great product! It not only tells you the presence of wifi, but the signal strength. It's light enough to hang on your key chain, and turns itself off automatically so you don't waste battery.
Now if they'd only develop the technology to let you know if the network is encrypted, it would be perfect....

Nice Basic Hotspot Finder Although this item does not give the info on open or secure network, it does work and seems to be sensitive. It is also nice and small and light for travel.

beware of seller: deals of today After leaving the negative feedback below, deals of today emailed me and said they would not refund unless I remove the negative feedback warning potential customers(victims as far as I am concerned). They still claim that the item that came in a pasted together box with several components missing is new,how hard is it for anyone to figure out that is a lie!Seller "deals_of_today", aka "amazcentral", aka "greatbuys" and who knows how many other aliases they use to sell under, sells used items as...

Great Gizmo for Twice the Price Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
Pros: This is a great little device. I work in tech support, and it has an easy enough read out that a user can understand it. Very basic, but you'll know if the problem is signal or config with this.
Cons: Does not allow you to specify networks, so it could be picking up any network. But hey, what do you want for this price.
Other Thoughts: recommended for anyone who uses...

Works great Tried it and it works great. Simple to use. Gets you into the zone, then fire up the laptop to see if the hot spot is unencrypted or encrypted. Can't go wrong for the money.

Good for Surveying Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 day to 1 week This user purchased this item from Newegg.com
Pros: This is a nice tool if you are surveying a customer site for connection of wireless devices, Lightweight, portable design, easy to use, I would recommend it.
Cons: Low strength receiver, I'm not sure if I was getting 100' from our building outside before getting no connection, however the laptop was connected at 80% strength.

decent little gadget Tech Level: somewhat high Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: Small, portable, extremely easy to locate wireless. EXTREMELY useful to locate dead spots in wireless coverage.
Cons: Does not separate secured wireless networks, or different networks. Simply says that there IS WiFi in this strength.
Other Thoughts: Usually end up booting the laptop to see what networks are available and if they are secured.

Excellent Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
Pros: Works very well, useful to find the location of an AP.
Cons: Can't filter out encrypted networks as far as I can tell.
