Nice and cheap Tech Level: somewhat high

Pros: A lot cheaper than other cards, easy to install, and works on both my WinXP Pro and Linux 2.6 box. So using jumbo packets (7200) and max data size of ~100,000 bytes was able to get 49 MB/sec from WinXP (dual 2200 MHz AMD) -> Linux (single 1800 MHz AMD) and 34 MB/sec Linux -> WinXP using network throughput test program ttcp.

Linux install needs tiny mod Tech Level: average

Cons: cheap scares me . . .
Other Thoughts: if you're installing in linux, you need to amend you modprobe.conf file to get the full Gb out of the card: alias eth2 r8169 media=0x10 different values for media make it run at differrent speeds . . .

Other Thoughts: softweyr you are wrong man, sorry to say but PCI = 33Mhz x 4 bytes (32 bits) = 133MB/s so you should get full gigabit speeds(125MB/s). Since you were wrong I will tell everyone the CORRECT ANSWER (Average hard drive speed for IDE hard drives (7200RPM) is ~ 32.00 Mb/sec (on Mode 2 Ultra ATA).) This sounds more like it. Other Thoughts: Really helped me get the most out of my fiber optic internet. Went from DL/UL speeds of 500-2000 KBPS to 17000 to 21000 KBPS.

Throughput not dependent on CPU Tech Level: high

Other Thoughts: Tait - the limited throughput you saw was not caused by the CPUs, your system and this card are limited by the bandwidth of the PCI bus. The speed you got is actually quite good for PCI; if you need faster than that you will have to upgrade to PCI-X or PCI-Express.
