Decent RAID/NAS With A Few Drawbacks (Note: My review is Mac based, but the Western Digital ShareSpace 4TB 4-Bay NAS RAID supports PCs and Linux as well.)
My history with SOHO NAS so far hasn't been all that good. The WD ShareSpace is the third NAS type device I've owned. The previous two (a 1 TB WD MyBook Pro II used as a NAS device through my Apple Airport Extreme and a 2 TB OWC Raidon NAS/RAID) were both returned. Excellent SOHO NAS Device I've been looking for a cost effective way of storing all my media in a centrally located, secure, and protected fashion. Solid NAS solution I acquired this drive primarily as a media archive solution, ideally to integrate with Windows Home Server and Media Center. Main desires:
1. Easy to set up
2. Good performance over 100BaseT and Gigabit connections
3. Compact and quiet
Setup was fairly straight forward. I got the device recognized by my main machine (WinXP box) within 5 minutes of connecting to my network. Setting it up with a Static IP proved to be a non issue as well. Only thing I wish this had ...

Other Thoughts: This is an updated review to fix an error my previous one - it's actually 21 watts idle with the 4 drives, hovering around 33 under load. Also I'm getting ~7.8MB/s write and ~6.9MB/s read w/ CIFS & RAID5 over 100Mbit.

Not ready for Primetime with Business use I bought this drive thinking that I can use this for our business use as part of windows Active Directory Domain as a storage server. But the support for AD is not very good. I am not able to retrieve the list of users and groups from AD for setting up permissions.
I called the support and they said that some time in the future it will be fixed. But they are not sure when would that be (!!!). So if you are planning to use it as a NAS storage server for business, then I would recommend...
