Manufactured by the Inventor of the Floppy

This is the retail box floppy sold by the inventor of the floppy disk - Sony. I agree you can buy these items at 10% less in other online stores. That is, you are getting an OEM from them - bare drives packaged in bubble wrap. That's it. If it were half the price, then sure buy it. But think about the savings you think you're getting from them - you still pay for shipping and/or taxes. This comes with free shipping and no tax, get the unit with something else and you're all set.

There are BETTER drives

Tech Level: high
Ownership: less than 1 day

Pros: Price is cheap

Cons: I tested this, the NEC, and the Mitsumi. This was the worst. On a marginal floppy, formatting gave 90 bad sectors with this drive, 1 with the Mitsumi, and 0 with the NEC. CHKDSK verified that the NEC could read the whole disk. The Sony drive went in the trash.

Sony 305" Floppy Drive.

I ordered two for my two computers. They arrived without a manual, hardware or cables or instalation instructions. This is an item for knowledgeable computer people. I therefore could not give it five stars. Fortunately I had some floppy cables left from the past!
The price of $9.02 each was the lowest I found anywhere on the web. With $8.55 SH+H for two it was a good deal.
The drives performed quite well, as expected. Both XP computers had no problems recognizing and installing th...

Floppy Drive Model

Tech Level: high
Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
This user purchased this item from Newegg.com

Pros: Well it is a floppy drive. It works. If you need a good cheap floppy drive so you can install SATA drivers for windows or something, this puppy will do the trick.

Cons: It can't make me dinner...

Other Thoughts: or can it??!?!?

DOA - Wouldn't read

Tech Level: high
Ownership: less than 1 day
This user purchased this item from Newegg.com

Pros: Decent price
Looks nice
Says SONY on the front

Cons: Wouldn't read any disks straight out of the packaging (a small bag). Used an old drive I found that worked fine.

Other Thoughts: Get another one

Missing screws and cable

Another reviewer pointed out that there is no cable in the box. What is also missing (in my case at least) is SCREWS. I have damaged a few installation holes on CD drives or disk drives because of incorrect screw sizes. You might say you can walk over to a computer store and buy screws. But, most screws come in small plastic packages and there is no way of knowing if the screw will fit or not, unless you rip the package and gently try a few. I have not used the floppy drive yet. So there may be ...

It's not the technical aspect...

The "granite" faceplate matches the Antec SLK3700AMB case perfectly. It's more of a bronze color. I never imagined there would be a drive that matched that case, much less a Sony. If you care at all how nice a case looks, or if you're a mom-and-pop PC shop that wants to sell computers in that good-lookin' case, this is the floppy drive to get.
