What a great "little" camera! I searched long and hard for reviews on the new SDR-H40 camcorder from Panasonic with very few results. I decided to go ahead and buy it from Amazon and just try it out. easy to use, portable, almost fits in a pocket so a month after buying this camcorder i had a chance to record my grandson's football( soccer) game in barrington il. seeing that it was my first time using it, it took me a few minutes to get used to steadying the camera. after that it was easy. the mic worked good with the audience noise( chanting) and the finger and thumb controls are comfortable enough for my big hand.
after i got home i had to install the software and transfer the movie to my computer. easy enough. the problem...

A great little HDD camcorder with one exception. The first video I took with my SDR-H40 camcorder was of a small conference inside a moderately illuminated, windowless hangar. Since I was new to the camcorder, it was set to auto-white balance. The video came out fine, and better than I expected. Don't buy the combo of camcorder+ battery offered Recently I order combo deal of the camcorder and
Lenmar LIP07 Lithium-ion Camcorder Battery Equivelent to the Panasonic CGA-DU07 Battery.
Yesterday I got the product and realized that the battery is not compatible with the camcorder. NExt week I am going on a trip and thought the spare battery would help me. Now in this situation, I have to settle with sinle battery .

Extremely Satisfied I absolutely love this camera. It is very easy to use, and has plenty of features for my purposes (family videos). I would recommend this to anyone. I thought it was a good buy. I am very happy with the hard drive; it sure beats dealing with tapes and DVDs. The only thing I think I need is a second battery, but the one that comes with it lasted long enough for several outings.

useless software We got the camera and tested it out by playing it directly to TV and then in Windows Media Player. So far so good. Then we tried using the software to edit video. You get what you pay for Had the camera for two months now. As some others have said it is relatively cheap. However, its basic functionality is easy to grasp. Buy it, charge it, use it.
Had no problem loading the software on my hated Vista PC. The software is somewhat less than intuitive but in the end I've have gotten the hang of it. I might try and see if I can get my eMac to work with the camera but right now I don't have time. I didn't try XP either again if I ever get time I'll try.

NOT COMPATIBLE WITH MACS or some PCs It claims to be compatible with a Macintosh.
HOWEVER the enclosed software states that it does NOT work with a Mac. When I called Panasonic support, I was told it IS compatible with a mac, but, by the way, they said, only for still photos. In fact, when I tried to transfer movies from the hard drive on the camera to my mac, my Nikon picture project software opened automatically and brought the movies across as still photos.

Video cannot available with my PC I meet the problem that the video cannot appear with the software coming with it. Only the still picture can be copied out. I have tried several PCs and found the same problem. I searched on the Panasonic website as well as the internet, but cannot find any method to solve this problem. I feel regret why panasonic cannot solve the problem like this. I guess I have to return it.

So...so... My previous camcorders, VHS and 8 mm format, created crisper images than this one. That was very disappointing. Recording in poorly lit rooms produced poor images. There is no light source in this unit. Joystick operation is tricky, if your thumb is slightly larger. There are so many limitations, and "operations not guaranteed" warnings listed through out the manual, making you to wonder what good this camera is.
