piece of junk
this model is a total piece of junk. don't waste your time or money with this receiver. i have had direct tv for years and never had problems until i got this receiver. it was installed by a direct tv tech one week ago and it has had nothing but problems since day one. it was not receiving guide info, then it lost the satellite signal and can't get it back. i have an hr 23 as well and that model works perfectly but when you go through direct tv, you have no control over which model receiver they...

TiVo fan says this is a nice box
I have long been a proponent and fan of Tivo-branded DVRs, and generic DVRs just seemed like junk to me. The cable company provided DVRs are especially bad. Since DirecTV does not yet have an equivalent of TiVo HD (one is coming in 2010), I took the plunge and got the HR22 to supplement my existing DirecTV/Sony SAT-T60 TiVo boxes, which are not HD.

awful
The user interface for this receiver is terrible. First, it's very slow to respond to commands from the remote. The pathways between the various control and information screens are a labyrinth. Things are not where you would expect them to be. Things have misleading names or labels. I've figured out that there are three ways to get out of a particular screen: "back", "exit", and pushing the button that got you in once again. It's not just that these buttons do different things, but the same butt...

They rope you in with extented Service agreements
I have used the DIRECTV HD DVR for the past 12 months. I agree with users who have complained about slow response times. It seemed the more data was stored on the unit, the longer the response times became. I was also very disappointed with the 24 month user agreement DIRECTV forces users to accept when they upgrade service to include HD DVR. The prices for the first year of service may be comparable to cable, but they do not give many price breaks in the last 12 months of the the agreement....
