Unless you are a sport journalist, I don't think you can go wrong with this camera
The 6 Megapixel Nikon D40 is targeted for those who want a relatively compact and light camera yet having most of the important SLR features. The D40 is priced reasonably (cheaper than D50/D80 and Canon Rebel XTi). In my opinion, if you are still considering whether to get a point and shoot camera or a DSLR, the D40 will be a better choice than any point and shoot camera, by far, even those with 8MP or 10MP. Great Pictures, But...
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) It takes great pictures. But controls & menus can be confusing/difficult, they are not intuitive.
Auto focus issues sometimes especially on Macro. Only digital SLR I've used. so nothing to compare it to.
Despite these issues, it's a great camera & package. I love it.

Perfect for the serious hobbyist
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) I've been using this camera for over a year, and I really like it. From an absolute beginner
The auto mode is very easy to use; it takes nice, clear, clean photos. It is like working with a point and shoot, but with better quality. As an absolute beginner, the manual mode was very difficult to use. There are no clear explanations of the modes and how the modes are displayed. For example, 15 means 1/15th of a second, but 15" means 15 seconds.
