Nice ... though WPA not working with Actiontec MI424-WR
I tried using this SMCWEB-N as a client with a Verizon FIOS Actiontec MI424-WR Wireless router. This setup does not work using WPA or WPA2 security. Using WEP works.
What I observe is that the SMCWEB-N seems to connect, but then after 3 seconds drops the connection and tries another channel. It keeps coming back to the channel that the Actiontec is using (I tried various channels 1, 3, 6, 8, and 11) but always fails after 3 seconds.
The SMC tech support is decent -- from...

One nitpick, but otherwise works well
Pros: Works very well as both an access point and a client. The auto channel selection helps a lot in a neighborhood with several wireless networks.
Con: Bad design decision (yes, I've asked them) with regard to MAC filtering... generally accepted use is to restrict wireless device access, but SMC uses it to filter ALL packets, from both wired and wireless networks.
The one problem I've found with this device would be more of a problem if MAC filtering were actually effecti...

Great Signal Range
Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 month to 1 year Pros: I set this up for a local Dr's office. The range is excellent allowing my to broadcast from the data closet in the back to the entire office, over 150' feet away, and never drop below 4 bars strength.
The web interface was superior to others I have used. I can't name names in a review, but if the word "Link" is in the name of the manufacturer, I have used their product and liked thi...

Excellent Idea
Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 week to 1 month This user purchased this item from Newegg Pros: Great idea, ethernet client/bridge with 4 ports. I wish more companies made items like this. This is perfect for hooking an entertainment center up to a wireless-n network. I am using it with my PS3, HD-DVD, Directv DVR, and Slingbox. Easy to set up. Wireless QOS.
Cons: Supports Wireless-N 300Mbps, but only has 100Mbps (200Mbps...

Fantastic
Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 month to 1 year This user purchased this item from Newegg Pros: These are great, I would recommend them. I have had lots of problem with Wireless routers and think the two devices should be separated. Enter the Access Point, works like a charm. From my Cable modem I go into my router then to two 8 port GB switches and then to these two APs. The router handles the DHCP and the APs only handle the wireless connection and they do i...

Poor design
Tech Level: high Ownership: less than 1 day This user purchased this item from Newegg Pros: irrelevant. didn't even open the box.
Cons: Can someone please tell me the purpose of a 300Mbps wireless connection if it automatically dumbs down the connection to 100Mbps right off the bat due to the lack of a gigabit lan port? Instead of improving my wireless LAN speed almost 6 fold over wireless G, I don't even double it due t...

Range good, Speed ok
Tech Level: somewhat high Ownership: 1 month to 1 year This user purchased this item from Newegg Pros: Connected from over 50 meters and through 4 brick walls.
Cons: At the price, it should have a gigabit switch.
Other Thoughts: This device is easy to use, and works.

Number 7 a month old now
Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 month to 1 year This user purchased this item from Newegg Pros: I have installed 2 in my home 3 at a friends home and 2 at a student center. All are working fine.
Cons: I understand that with encrypted wireless you only get about half the rated bandwidth. The other half is used in managing the connection and the encryption. Thus a 100mb wired connection fits. BUT being SMC did add the nice switch I’...

Ouch
Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 week to 1 month This user purchased this item from Newegg Pros: If this worked well, could be great
Cons: Switch component would NOT connect to my Sony Vaio. Would not recognize it was connected, yet same cable to a Buffalo router works. 20' apart, it takes 2-5 seconds for a ping response from something on the other side. You get 4-5 failures, then 5-10 pings in the 1500+ ms range, then it work...
