Great Design, its just the ruggedness thats the problem
No question great design - 5 out of 5 rating for sure. Support is a 4, pretty good. Where they fall down is on ruggedness. There may be improvements in the 2009 versions but the main problem with my 2008 set is many of the parts are made with plastics. There is 52 lb maximum of weight and thats alot to ask to support of some of the types of plastics used to construct this product. The minor flaw in my view is the choice of materials for this product. For example, the spindles that pick up and ho...

Lack Durability
I'm disappointed. We had a set of these in my clinic in Iraq (Physical Therapy). The obvious reason for selecting adjustable weights was that they only take up a small space and they weigh less than a full set when you are deploying with them. When I arrived the weights were already in the clinic. I don't know how long they have been there. At first they worked. The weight plates seemed loose when using though. I was concerned about performing overhead lifting as I wasn't confident that t...

Amazing home workout tool
I used the 552 dumbells with my P90X workout and I have to say they made life a heck of a lot easier. It couldn't be easier to select the appropriate weight with these things, and with limited time between excersizes, these were golden. The construction is sturdy; not once did I feel any uneasiness in using them. Even moves where the dumbells were lifted quickly and brought back down didn't cause any issues with the locking mechanism of the dumbells. The only slight issue is the overall leng...

BEST DUMBELLS EVER!!!!
I was torn between these and the PowerBlock dumbells I kept reading about. I had a chance to check out the 2008 and prior model Bowflex Select Tech's at Dicks Sporting Goods, and I remember thinking about how easy it was to spin the dials to adjust the weights.
My only concern and hesitation was that a few reveiws mentioned the possibility of the weights rattling and people were worried they could fall off? I had not heard this before, so I researched it more and although the PowerBl...

Huge and awesome.
I just got them, and my first impression upon getting them out of the (decidedly ample) packaging was "wow, these things are MASSIVE." They really are huge, in a way you may have to see to really appreciate; they're around 16.5 inches long and they're about 8.5 inches wide at the largest plate, and will have a pretty commanding presence in whatever room you keep them. That being said, they space they take up is relatively minor compared to an actual set with this range of weight, and it's really...

defective product/safety problem
This product is defective in that the handle does not grip some of the weight plates tightly after they are dialed in. This can cause severe injury when the plates come loose when you are holding the dumbbell overhead. This almost happened to me when a I was doing bench presses. Fortunately, the plate came out when I had the dumbbells laterally. Also, sometimes the plates come out as you are picking up the dumbbell from the stand.

Don't drop them!!
I have owned these weights for over two months now and used them 5 times a week. A couple of weeks after I bought them I was doing an exercise and tweaked my shoulder (I'm old, what can I say). I dropped the weight from about 2 feet off the ground onto a padded mat. One of the plastic wheels that hold the weights to the handle broke. I called bowflex (actually Nautallis) and was told that if you drop the weights from more than 18 inches they are not covered. I purchased a new handle which cost m...

Happy Customer
First Thing -- You cannot / must not / should not attempt to drop these.
If you want a dumbbell that you can work out until failure and drop (which I, personally, think is foolish) this product is not for you.
If you are performing workouts that are under control / smart these will work fine.
I like that they were cheap to ship from Amazon. I am a previous owner of the smaller SelectTech (the 2.5-20lbs ones) and I purchased the 552 because I needed heavier thing...

SelectTech are okay, but there are much better options
I am in my late 40's and have been lifting weights for years, but mostly at a gym. Recently, kids and such have made it increasingly difficult to get to the gym daily so I decided to work out at home, but there is precious little room to spare. Being the type who researches things to death before buying, I began looking into adjustable dumbells. I checked out the Bowflex SelectTech, PowerBlocks, Gold's Gym SwitchPlate, and Ironmaster Quick Lock Dumbell system.
In brief: SelectTech fel...

If you are considering buying this, maybe you should donate your money to me instead
For the price of these dumbbells you can buy a gym membership for a good 3 years. Go out and buy some dumbbells that are within your personal restraints. Buy an actual fitness machine that will work your entire body instead of your arms. Whatever you do, don't buy this because it will probably end up sitting in a closet in a month or two and collecting dust because it will not help you achieve your fitness goals.
