It's a Sony?
The unit itself does technically work, but I am not very impressed. The user interface is horrific due to its complexity, which is unusual for Sony products. You have to push the buttons on the remote control too hard to get them to actually respond, which is half of the problem. The manual is a little too concise, leaving out pages for setups that are probably fairly common, which means that you have to guess instead.
Worst of all, when I plugged it in using Sony's recommended setup,...

Broke after a week
What else to say :-). I put in a pre-recorded tape, it made a clunk sort of noise and wouldn't play tapes after that. 2/3 of the screen was all snowy. I tried several different tapes before returning it to the store. Aside from that, I found it clunky to use. I should have come here for the reviews first.

No need to pay more for a Sony
This product was a complete disappointment. I have had it less than a year & have had problems with the dvd player from the beginning. Now it doesn't register dvds in the machine at all. Sony's website gives you the option to return the item & get someone else's refurbished machine aka someone else's problem {$33} or to have your machine fixed {$90} - return shipping also to be paid for by the consumer & this is if your machine is under warranty. Not satisfactory options from a company like ...

Not good
Record quality is very good. DVD progresive is also very good. Remote control is non responsive. No TIME back-up when power failure... IT WILL NOT RECORD your programs if any power failure happends. You will have to set the time before it will record again. For some illogical reason, your programs will remain in memory, but the time will not!??!?!? Cant understand this, first VCR i know does not have this simple feature and it is frustrating when you record every day. Imagine if you leave ...

I am on my third because they keep breaking
I was expecting a quality Sony product when I bought this. I have another sony DVD player that I have been using for about 3 years without any problems. This unit is another story.
After 4 months of use, the player stopped working with DVD/RW disks. A few days later, manufactured disks stopped working, now a few days later, no DVDs will play on the unit.
I am so glad I got an extended warranty, because I am going to go and pick up my third new unit today for another 4 mo...

Sony SLV D56O
I have 2 of these and am thinking about a third, but I really want to get a DVD recorder/VCR unit that has the one feature of this that I really love. And that is the "Dail Timer" on the front of the machine. We aren't really into technology so I don't really know if the video/dvd quality is any good, and I rarely use the DVD player, although I don't recall having any problems when I did, but I record ALOT of shows and the dial timer lets me set the unit to record without ever having to turn t...

I'm pleased with this unit
I've had this unit for over a year, and I'm very pleased with it. My only complaint is that when I kept it on once for a few days straight, using its tuner instead of my TV tuner, it stopped working altogether. It was okay when I turned it on the next day. I've found that if I keep it on only when I'm actively watching a DVD or a VHS, then turn it off afterwards, everything's fine with it.

Typically nice Sony product. I am confident that it will provide reliable service long beyond its mfgr. warranty. This is based on years of experience purchasing and enjoying numerous Sony products.

Great DVD/VCR Combo From Sony
I bought this DVD/VCR two years ago, and I've had no problems. To keep this unit in good shape, you must use a good head cleaner. I'm upgrading to a digital unit, and will use this in my guest bedroom. My advice is to stick with a label/manufacturer that you're familiar with; a company that offers great products, excellent service, and reasonable prices. For me, I'll continue to buy Sony.

A decent buy for the options
I bought this product about 3 years ago refurbished off ebay and got it for like 60$ but has played prob 3 years everyday for hours and never had any problems. Not sure if thats because it was refurbished but still was a great buy and with the progressive scan its a cheaper way to have high def picture and sound.
