Fantastic little drive
Tech Level: high Ownership: more than 1 year This user purchased this item from Newegg Pros: Great speed, great price, nice size, and easily portable. I also own a 320gb size and it is adequate for general use. For the tech impaired, this is not SCSI speed, but it is not supposed to be. You wont be gaming off of it, but it is used for STORAGE. I am so tired of hearing that it isn't "FAST ENOUGH." Easily formattable using the quick format fea...

Finally, a Western Digital Passport Essential in 500 GB!!!
The Western Digital My Passport Essential 500 GB USB Portable Drive adds a larger capacity to a brand of hard-drive I have come to rely on. For the longest time, I have used these WD passport drives for my portable backups. Finally a 500 GB model is here. The Western Digital My Passport Essential 320GB was the largest capacity you could get for a while.
WD has been increasing variety by adding a variety of colors including black, red, yellow, white and blue. But other than t...

Perfect - Simplicity, light, and HUGE Capacity
This USB drive is exactly what I was looking for, large capacity (500 GB), feels durable, compact and light, and simple to use on my Dell or Mac. Requires no electric power, and is so compact that it doesn't feel like I have anything else in my brief bag.
I bought in combination with the rubber skin (Premium Silicone Sleeve Case for Western Digital WD Passport Essential Elements Portable 2.5" Hard Drive - (Hard Drive NOT included!!)) - which added no "bulk" - only protection.

Nice.
This product is just as described, and quite nice. It's a great price for it's size; portable and no need for an A/C adapter, just a usb plug. The plug and play factor and weight is the largest plus of this, in my opinion. The only downsides I've come across by far is the finger-print-stained cover; it's best to keep a plastic cover or something over it, to keep it clear and finger print free. And, I didn't quite expect the WD program to be inside; it's somewhat troublesome for me, but it's not ...

Very impressive Drive!
Quick summery, Works as advertised, easy to format to ntfs usable drive space on 500 is 465 the same as the previous My Book, it needs no external (additional power). The heat generated is not really noticeable at all.
potential negative: little white flashing light, there is no more disc noise than an IPOD. The only warning I would give is the lack of a case, it really needs protection and should (in my opinion) only be transported or even stored in a case. However this can't ...

LASTED FIVE (5) DAYS!!!!
This absolute worthless piece of junk lasted for five days of mild use and I lost 500 gbs of photos. This is the 2nd Passport that I have problems with. Stick to a Lacie Rugged, Much better product. Oh yeah and DO NOT PURCHASE FROM "INFINITE SURPLUS" !!! They refused to take it back and asked me to go thru Western Digital directly even though it's only been 5 days. Scumbags. Stick to a decent company with a decent return policy.

Most portable 500GB I've ever had.
Tech Level: average Ownership: 1 day to 1 week This user purchased this item from Newegg Pros: The device serves its purpose well. It is small, lightweight, and overall extremely portable. Comparing it to the competition, I think its the most portable and best looking hard drive for its size on the market right now. Everything worked just fine from the initial plug-in.
Cons: I didn't know they made USB cables that small. The i...

Terrible support, not compatible with mac
I purchased this drive based on the positive feedback, but have not been able to sync it with my mac. I have gone on line to email the problem, and have followed directions to format disk, but without success. I attempted to contact company by phone and was told to call back later even though they have 24 hour service. I am unable to use the drive and unable to return it. For mac users, I would avoid this product.

Was nice while it lasted
Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 week to 1 month This user purchased this item from Newegg Pros: Loved the fact that it was compact and powered by USB. Very quiet little drive.
Cons: Short USB cable barely made it from the drive atop the computer to the front USB ports 2/3rds of the way down the case.
Other Thoughts: Within a week it started freezing the computer during use, and eventually just plugging it in...

doesn't work with powerbook G4
Tech Level: average Ownership: less than 1 day This user purchased this item from Newegg Pros: very small and good looking, and works great with the pc in our house
Cons: The WD Passport Essential 500 GB USB harddrive does NOT work with powerbook G4 (which unfortunately is the computer I wanted to use the drive with). The USB ports on most Powerbooks are unable to supply enough power to bus-powered hard drives to make the driv...
