Many video inputs one video output
That was my goal in life. To have four video inputs from various sources and upconvert them to one video output. This would greatly simplify our lives!
Well, I found it in the Sony STR-DE998.
I have all of my A/V equipment connected into it and they all get upconverted to component video to my HD-capable TV. I had been looking for something like this for years. The video quality is great, too.
Now, my wife can stop messing with the TV remove and switch the ...

Great receiver for an unbeatable price
I bought this to replace a one year old KLH 6.1 speaker. I never thought the KLH great, but the difference was like night and day. The sound quality is exceptional and it has all the features I had wanted. I have it connected to an Onkyo 7.1 speaker system and an Epson overhead projector.
RCA/S-Video to component video up conversion is priceless because I need to run only one cable upto my projector and I don't have to change the source on the projector everytime I change the source...

Simplifying the installation of a great receiver/amplifier
A glance at its back panel indicates the 998's abundant connectivity. If something doesn't meet your needs, you can probably reassign an unused resource: I have two DirecTV PVRs. For the first I used the 998's TV/Satellite s-video and optical inputs. For the second I used Video 1 for the s-video and reassigned the MD/Tape optical input to Video 1. I had only one tight squeeze: DVD has neither an optical input nor a way to reassign an unused optical input to DVD but it has regular (RCA) and digit...

Good value & performance, interface somewhat flawed
I would give this 3.5 stars if I could, but I'm being generous and going with 4 due to the exceptional price. All-in-all this unit has a lot of great features. I would recommend it for people who are tech-savvy, willing to overlook a few warts, and want a great price. However, if you're looking for a unit that is easy to use, or for a fully featured 2nd zone support, look elsewhere.
I reccomend my sister purchase this receiver as a present for her husband based on several require...

Great AMP with some minor limitations
I probably got my hands on one of the first-shipped 998's this year. I was going to get the 997 but there's some added functionality that the 998 provides (and it's shiny-new). I've had it set up running 7.1 surround with my new JBL SCS300-7 for about a week now.
Sound: Sound is great, but now quite as loud as I expected. I'm not sure if that's the speakers or the AMP though...but when I'm watching a movie and want it 'movie-theatre loud' I turn the AMP all the way up to max. ...

Sony STR-DE998
This is an excellent Home Theater Receiver with above average audio controls. I have owned far more expensive equipment and comparitively this receiver with 7.1 channels and an extra set of B channels to power speakers in another zone is an excellent choice. Lots of connectivity options and includes super CD/multichannel audio. Also allows you to listen to different audio sources in separte zones from the same receiver. Priced at $499, this is all you'll need to produce thundering theater so...

Jameson Thottam Receiving great audio thanks to the Sony STR-DE998 Receiver
Jameson Thottam Receiving great audio thanks to the Sony STR-DE998 Receiver
The Sony STR-DE998 is a great A/V receiver. I have used Sony exclusively for the last 15 years and have never had any problems. My first real receiver was a Marantz. They are excellent, but I didn't want to spend that much money, and to be quite honest, I really can't hear a difference under most listening situations. I listened to other receivers by Denon, Onkyo, Pioneer etc. and really did not hear any dif...

Sony Slips
The price looked right, but as others have mentioned this receiver has:
*a poor layout for inputs,
*a terrible manual,
*a difficult remote,
Sony is coasting on their name with this one.
In addition, after a period of full, normal operation the unit began to go into "Protect" mode... there was little information available (not in the manual), so I began troubleshooting, as recommended in some online forums, by removing all connections - and found that t...

Good AV reciever for the money
Previous sony owner, had a STR 925 purchased in 99. The new 998 is a pretty good bargin. Plenty of power, menu's are general sony format, so if you are used to previous sony systems no big change. Only complaint is that I wish it was pre set to use an optical in for the DVD player instead of a co ax digital in. You can re assign extra optical in's to be used for the DVD. Speaker system paired to this JBL SCS 300 7.1. Overall very happy with the whole system for less then $700 bucks I can no...

Full-featured simplicity with some minor flaws
Original review from 2005:
This receiver was very easy to set up, while still providing enough flexibility that I could be sure that I was getting the optimum sound for my configuration. The sound quality is quite good, and the connectivity options are great aside from a few slight annoyances (such as some arbitrary limitations in how you can remap video inputs). The only major flaw I've found is that the built-in component upconversion circuitry has trouble with composite sources...
