not a good remote
I bought this remote nearly one year ago, so i have had a good amount of time to wrestle with this remote. I am a technology afficionado and demand a lot from my hardware. Initially when I bought this remote I was extremely happy with it. I got home and was able to program most of my home theater hardware into the remote with the phillips codes providing around 75% of the correct buttons for me.
At first I was frustrated by this but since the remote is a "learning" remote I wasn'...

Good for the price
This remote has buttons for Tivo and Replay TV. It has a learning button. Permanent memory retention means that you don't lose your codes when you change the batteries. It's laid out in a way that makes intuitive sense. I picked it up and it felt good in my hand. For the price you won't get two things that I like in a remote: back-lit buttons and macros. We watch movies in low light to dark, and back-lit buttons are a must. The longevity of this product may be problematic, judging from othe...

Very good remote for only 30 bucks
I just got this remote several weeks ago when I got a TiVo. This thing does the job, and does it well. What I really love about this remote is that its a very nice to hold in your hand and very thin and light. Most remotes now a days are huge, bulky and annoying to navigate with. This one it's nice to hold in your hands and for only 30 bucks, it's a very good deal in my book. So as long as you do not need a LCD screen with lots of flashy features and don't want to pay a ton of money, I high...

Cheap Is as Cheap Does
There are a lot of remote controls on the market from the $999.95 (SRP) Philips Pronto TSU7500 on down. I didn't want anything too fancy but I do need to control several devices. The PMDVR8 seems to work adequately (for my needs) with my Toshiba TV and Mitsubishi VCR. I was pleasantly surprised to have it operate at least some of my Kenwood A/V receiver/Tuner/Amplifier box (I figure I can program the rest of the controls I need but I haven't gotten around to it yet.) I was astounded when the rem...

I am buying 2 more as backups !!!
My Home has ReplayTV, Sony, and Aiwa. I never had trouble find remotes for the Sony, but the Replay and Aiwa were always tricky. This is the first remote that operated all 3 right out of the box !!! I am very happy. I hope that they will make a backlit version. I am buying 2 extra just to have extra. Great price.

Excellent, then it flaked out
This is the first universal remote I've seen of any price that has all the buttons I need to control my A/V setup (the main one missing from all other remotes I've tried is the two guide buttons, one for channel, one for recorded programs for a DVR), though admittedly I have not seen everything out there.
Anyway, I was able to set it up to do pretty much exactly what I want, including having the volume keys always control my Teac AV receiver, except when the remote is in TV mode.

Not for Home Theater or HD systems
The box said this is good for home video but it is NOT suitable for such use. The volume contol only works with the TV directly and cannot be changed to control the home theater amplifer. I was unable to learn commands from my Sony AV remote control. Switching from one device to another requires multiple button pushes to change the TV and amp. Of course there are no commands for HD sets like wide-screen format button or HD/TV mode button required for Phillips HD TV sets.

It worked great until it didn't
I bought this remote with hopes of consolidating down to just one remote. Initially I was able to get my TV, DVR, DVD, and VCR to all work flawlessly with it.
I wish the story ended there, but this thing just stopped working one day. It lost all of its settings, and though I was able to reprogram them, the learning function seems to be permanently gone.
I strongly recommend you avoid this product.

NO Receiver Punch-Through
I bought this remote to replace one that does not have as many features, but I was shocked to learn that this remote does not have Audio Punch-through to the Home Theater system! I find it unbelievable that Philips would give Full Home Theater support but would only allow audio punch-through to the TV!!??? This makes absolutely NO SENSE!!! Why would anyone be using the Audio on the TV if they have a Home Theater. I understand that not everyone has a home theater, but this remote is designed ...
