Place a dot 1/2 the size of a grain of a grain of rice on the center of the CPU heat spreader only. Give place the heat sink in place. DO NOT LIFT TO CHECK THE GUNK! One gentle twist, 15.4 degrees clockwise, then back to original position. Clamp it and power up.
The heat/cool cycles help...

Pros: this stuff is great, i've actually taken all 11 computers in my house(including laptops) and re-done them all with Artic Silver 5 and watch the temps go down with an average of 3*C.
Cons: this tube is slightly small, but its lasted me about a year now, and plenty of reapplications

Best Thermal Compound

Pros: AC5 is by far and above the best thermal compound I've ever used. Much better heat transferrence than anything Thermaltake, Zalman, or anyone else puts in with their sinks.
Cons: Mildly conductive, so be careful of those traces. Arctic Ceramique might be safer for applications that are close to circuits, since it's completely non-conductive. Also tastes NASTY.

Pros: Such a small spread, makes such a huge difference. Just apply a BB size drop in the middle of the CPU heatspreader and mount the heatsink on. Turn it a few angles one way, then turn it a few angels the other way to let make proper contact. Athlon X2 3800+ at a cool 31 degrees Celsius!!!

Cons: Doesnt work well with my air conditioner, nor as a salad dressing.
