Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This modem replaced an 8 year old failing Motorola Surfboard. The Comcast technician said, nice dinosaur, regarding the old beige beast. Since I did not rent that dinosaur, it was free many years ago after rebate, I decided to buy my own to replace the dinosaur.

Motorola Surfboard SB5101 Cable Modem - Works Great
I purchased the Motorola Surfboard SB5101 Cable Modem along with a Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless Router to replace a Linksys Cable Modem/Wireless Router that was constantly dropping out. Since installing this new equipment, I have not had a single loss of network conductivity -- what a pleasure not have to reset and restart everything 2-3 times per day. This combination of 2 devices is obviously not as convenient as having an all in one unit, but what really counts is performance.

Works fine, but have useful info for Cox Cable users
I had an intermittent problem when using my old Motorola SB101. The computer usually could access the internet in the early morning, but fail sometimes between 10AM and noon. Sometimes, I could restart it in the evening by disconnecting it completely, waiting for a while and reconnecting. TV's worked fine. I phoned Cox, and tech support usually could sense the modem from their office, even though I couldn't access the internet. Other posters here mentioned failures in about 5 years, so I purch...

Can't beat the price - and it's a quality model
For those looking to sign up for Cable high speed internet, this is for you. Won't work for DSL. In my area (California) the going rate for a modem lease from the cable company is $3/month. If you're on a one year contract, it'll make sense to lease it from them, since it's easier to have them replace it than you. For a two year contact, things flip around, especially if you got this with free shipping. Mind you, its not a big difference...
