Great Songs, But Flawed Compliation
After 12 years, 7 albums and countless singles, here appears the first ever compilation of Tori Amos. "Tales of a Librarian" (20 songs; 78 min., plus bonus DVD) is neither a "best of" nor a "greatest hits" but simply a compilation of great Tori Amos songs. The first half of the album is the "rockier" one, with such classics as "Precious Things" (Tori's best song ever?), "Cornflake Girl", "God", "Spark", "Cruci...

a must own for Ears With Feet
"Tales of a Librarian" is the new cd from Tori Amos. While at first glance it may seem like a Greatest Hits album, it is not. All 20 songs were selected by Tori, so rather than this being a collection of her singles, this is a collection of Tori's favorite tracks. There are 16 songs from her first five albums (nothing from Strange Little Girls or Scarlet's Walk), 2 former B-Sides (Mary, Sweet Dreams), and 2 new songs (Angels, Snow Cherries from France). These songs have been remixed and rema...

Tori Amos: the Adult Contemporary remixes.
As a sampler and introduction to Tori's work, this is an interesting concept. To anyone who's actually heard her work before, it's terrible. Tori's music (well, at least at the time of this release) was aimed at a more alternative, rock-edged crowd; for some reason, though, all these songs were given a reworking as if they were slated for inoffensive AC radio release. If it was stacatto, it was filled in. If it was harsh, it was softened. If it was muddy, production is layered on li...

Great Tori Collection
For the most part, this is an outstanding collection of some of Tori's best works. Of course, you can't please everyone and a couple of my personal favorites aren't here *China, Hey Jupiter, Northren Lad* but oh, well. Many of the stand-outs on here are from her debut "Little Earthquakes." These include the haunting "Crucify" along with the beautiful "Winter" and "Silent All These Years." "God" from "Under the Pink" is here and respre...

Beware The Wrath Of The Fanatics
If you read through any of the reviews of Tori Amos's work, you'll see an unholy number of 5/5 reviews. You'll also note that even many of the critical reviews begin with the defensive "I'm a huge fan of... but... " And furthermore that these reviews tend to have ratings like "1/33 people found this review useful". This is because Tori Amos has an insanely devoted fan base, to whom she can do no wrong, and to whom any criticism of her is greeted with the kind of fury that eve...

Never heard Tori? Really? Well, here you go!
While I usually don't like to recommend best-of or collection compilations of artists as starters, I think this one does a good job of touching on the various aspects of Tori. Only setback is a collection can't give you that same feel of a single album--a single entity--and the message and culture that comes with it.Tales of a Librarian seems to focus on her debut album quite a bit (whilst her live CD focused a lot on Under The Pink). So, from Little Earthquakes, we have: Precious Things, S...

A Stunning Collection From A Complex Genius
Tori Amos is rightly considered as one of the most talented and unique singer/songwriters of the modern era, so it seemed only fitting that she should release a collection of her best material in 2003, some 11 years after her now-classic debut "Little Earthquakes." Tori has never been a 'normal' artist by anyone's standards, so of course she couldn't just put out your typical Greatest Hits record. She had to take her own personal favourite songs from her entire back catalogue and 'recondition' t...

Disappointing for what it COULD have been
First of all, you need to know that this collection does not cover her last two records - only 1992-1999. However, it is NOT a comprehensive collection of singles for the causual fan (e.g., one of her most memorable singles, "Caught a Lite Sneeze", is missing). What it includes is 16 previously released BUT REMIXED personal "favorites" (presumably), which means that the highly idiosyncratic Tori fans own favorites are likely to be disappointed. The collection also include...

Don't play the Bonus DVD.
I'm giving this CD a low rating, for many of the same reasons that have already been stated in these reviews. The biggest disappointment was the "lifting of the veil" bonus DVD live tracks. Recorded during soundchecks, they are the most uninspired, souless, going-through-the-motion, phoned-in performances I have EVER heard or seen that were so incredibly painful for me to listen to and watch. They are perfunctory performances done just so someone offstage can adjust the electronics. I...

A little bit dissapointed...
I just bought this CD taking a bit of a risk; a $14 gamble to be exact. Prior to this all I had heard of Tori Amos was 'Cornflake Girl' which I quite liked. But it was the positive reviews on this very site that finally prompted me to purchase this CD. And here goes a slightly different review...
OK, I admit it might just be my taste in music. I'm not into the kind of classical-jazz influenced alternative stuff artists like Tori Amos, Ani Difranco.etc put out. When I heard Cornflake ...
