Perfect - Simplicity, light, and HUGE Capacity
This USB drive is exactly what I was looking for, large capacity (500 GB), feels durable, compact and light, and simple to use on my Dell or Mac. Requires no electric power, and is so compact that it doesn't feel like I have anything else in my brief bag.
I bought in combination with the rubber skin (Premium Silicone Sleeve Case for Western Digital WD Passport Essential Elements Portable 2.5" Hard Drive - (Hard Drive NOT included!!)) - which added no "bulk" - only protection.

Finally, a Western Digital Passport Essential in 500 GB!!!
The Western Digital My Passport Essential 500 GB USB Portable Drive adds a larger capacity to a brand of hard-drive I have come to rely on. For the longest time, I have used these WD passport drives for my portable backups. Finally a 500 GB model is here. The Western Digital My Passport Essential 320GB was the largest capacity you could get for a while.
WD has been increasing variety by adding a variety of colors including black, red, yellow, white and blue. But other than t...

Nice.
This product is just as described, and quite nice. It's a great price for it's size; portable and no need for an A/C adapter, just a usb plug. The plug and play factor and weight is the largest plus of this, in my opinion. The only downsides I've come across by far is the finger-print-stained cover; it's best to keep a plastic cover or something over it, to keep it clear and finger print free. And, I didn't quite expect the WD program to be inside; it's somewhat troublesome for me, but it's not ...

Get a drive with a power supply!
Perhaps handy for carrying around and the occasional backup, but as a general use drive about worthless for me--USB power only feature STINKS. Even with a powered USB hub in combination with my Mac Powerbook, this thing spontaneously 'ejects' and disappears from the desktop multiple times per day. (Without a powered drive my laptop cannot even recognize this drive, not enough power via USB.) Even with my G5 desktop the same problem--often loses power and disappears from the desktop, I must disco...

Very impressive Drive!
Quick summery, Works as advertised, easy to format to ntfs usable drive space on 500 is 465 the same as the previous My Book, it needs no external (additional power). The heat generated is not really noticeable at all.
potential negative: little white flashing light, there is no more disc noise than an IPOD. The only warning I would give is the lack of a case, it really needs protection and should (in my opinion) only be transported or even stored in a case. However this can't ...

LASTED FIVE (5) DAYS!!!!
This absolute worthless piece of junk lasted for five days of mild use and I lost 500 gbs of photos. This is the 2nd Passport that I have problems with. Stick to a Lacie Rugged, Much better product. Oh yeah and DO NOT PURCHASE FROM "INFINITE SURPLUS" !!! They refused to take it back and asked me to go thru Western Digital directly even though it's only been 5 days. Scumbags. Stick to a decent company with a decent return policy.

I have to pay for their mistakes
The product was completely defective. It even blew out my printer connection. When I called support, they told me to try it on a friend's computer. They wouldn't be friends for long if I did. Then I had to pay the postage on the return to Western Digital. They had very demanding requirements for the packaging. If not followed, it voided the warranty. If I returned it to the vendor, Beach Cameras, I'd be paying the postage and a 10% restocking charge. Not happy at all.

DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM BEFORE READING THE CONTENTS!
The title of this item is "320GB My Passport Essential 2.5IN Blue". But the description clearly states that the item is ONLY 250GB of storage space. I almost purchased this item because it was listed as close to $30.00 less expensive than another Western Digital 320GB. I figured it was less expensive because the color Blue was in less demand. Instead it is because it is a totally different product with fewer gigabytes of storage. READ UP BEFORE YOU OPEN UP (your wallet that is).

Two times I lost data.
Generally I am happy with WD disks. I am using Western Digital My Book Premium 2TB External Hard Drive and 1 TB without any problem. This disk orinally came with Fat, I change it NTFS. Probab because of USB at least two times this external drive lost some directory files. I used chkdsk. One time it solved the problem. But second time I lost data. Until this I can not trust this disk. If it is possible I plan to use disk as internal hard drive.

Don't do it
Unless you want to spend more money after buying this item, find a hard disk that will actually work as advertised. It won't work on either of my laptops, and I had to buy from Western Digital's online store (the only place the device is available) a power cord for $10 + $7 shipping. Western Digital ended up charging me twice for said cord, so that so far it's cost me $35 and the item has not even shipped. The drive seems cheaply made, too. I'm regretting I wasted my money on it when I could...
