Beware - My Book drives fail if left on 24/7
This review is from: Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 500 GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive WDH1U5000N (Personal Computers) I'm an experienced computer technician with 20+ years of on the job experience. I am a firm supporter of Western Digital internal drives, and have always used them. When the My Book drives were released several years ago, I was enthusiastic that a low-cost external drive solution was available from my preferred hard drive vendor.
After y...

Reliable Home Backup
I have recently bought two portable drives: 1) Western Digital WDME1600TN My Passport Essential 160GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive (Midnight Black) and 2) Western Digital My Passport Essential 250GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive (Intense Blue).
I was impressed with the reliability of the portables. I have no problems with them but I was still running out of space. So I wanted to purchase another external drive.
I wanted to try other brands that I've used before. Seagate and Ma...

Good external HD, but use ONLY for backup/data storage
I've been using Western Digital HD's for nearly 15 years now and never yet have had one of them fail on me (though there's always a first time!) I currently own two of these My Book 500GB external drives which I have hooked up to my newest system. These drives are attractively designed, quite sleek with good ventilation and very easy to set up; the only things you need to do are (1) plug in the power adapter and connect it to a suitable socket and (2) connect the USB cable to the computer; Wind...

Western Digital MyBook Essential 750 GB - Nice Looking, Decent Performing External HD
Western Digital 750GB My Book Essential USB 2.0 External Hard Drive, WDH1U7500N
My Western Digital hard drive collection is really growing. I got this new Western Digital MyBook 750 GB drive because I've had good luck with several other models and I wanted to step up in size. This is an attractive update to the Essentials line of external home hard drives. The performance is on par with other MyBook drives, but as capacity increases more people will want to step up to a version wit...

Best for the price, quality and speed a plus
After reading a few poor reviews I was reluctant to puchase this hard drive but because of the price decided to go with it. I have to say I have had this drive for about a month now and have nothing bad to say about it. Installation is a breeze as your computer will see this as a removable device and treat it as such. I have a 350gb hard drive that was almost full 8gb left and transferred roughly 250gb to this hard drive in less than 2 hours. I did notice a slow down when connected to the usb p...

Easy setup, performs as described.
Hard drives seem to have become a commodity with speed, failure rates and cost per GB being the important factors. I am pleased with the drive, it works as described. The one issue I'm having is with the automatic on/off feature. I'm using the drive with my dish network DVR. The drive senses when the computer is turned on and off to turn itself on or off. It does not get the message from the DVR and remains on. There does not appear to be a physical on off switch so I have to unplug the d...

Works Great / Easy and Cheap back-up system
I own the 500gig version of the WD Essentials. I have a LOT of data and use the WD solely for music storage. I have not noticed any lag time in playing music files in either Itunes or Windows Media Player. I also have a few avi files stored on the WD andthey have played andor burned from the drive just fine. brbrThere is about a 10 second pause when i click on the WD short cut but other then that its perfectly in-sync with the rest of my system. brbrI am on my way out to purchase the 750 gig ver...

To the review below mine
Tech Level: high Ownership: more than 1 year Pros: I actually own the 500GB version of this drive and it has been nothing but perfect since day one. Got it to replace an old failed drive after the terrible Maxtor I'd originally gotten to replace it proved faulty.
Cons: none
Other Thoughts: Doc, you are a moron, the default picture on the product page shows the back of the chassis.

Had two fail
I bought two of these, one for Projects and one as backup. They both crashed in the same month. Not good for the Pro video world.

Perfect Performer
Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 month to 1 year Pros: I own 2 DJ Dance Clubs. After failures of other brands of HDs in computers I only use WD HDs. I bought this and 2 other WD my book HDs for music record/playback with 2 Denon DN-HS5500 Controllers. I went large capacity for full wav files, no MP3 compression, to get max audio fidelity. This drive works absolutely great! Not a single hiccup. I have ripped, transferred & played this drive on lapto...
