Works fine for me
Just got this drive for Christmas since I need major backup space. This is my fourth external drive. After I formatted it to NTSF I started backing up and no problems here. I dont know what other people are using it for but all I need is to back up my movies and music and move it around from computer to computer. No problems at all. It does not have an on off switch which is my only set back. Other than that It does exactly what I need it to do. It also networks fine from my CPU to laptop. A bit...

Beware - My Book drives fail if left on 24/7
I'm an experienced computer technician with 20+ years of on the job experience. I am a firm supporter of Western Digital internal drives, and have always used them. When the My Book drives were released several years ago, I was enthusiastic that a low-cost external drive solution was available from my preferred hard drive vendor.
After years of using these drives in both a professional and personal capacity, and after having the last of my 5 personal My Book drives die today, I felt c...

Plug and Play External Drive
I currently have 2 terabytes of storage, 6 do-it-yourself "DIY" external drives housing various sized hard drives, and a MyBook. This review compares their performance. All drives are currently on-line connected to a 7 port USB hub.
In the Box
A black box housing the drive, a brick power supply, and a USB cable are key items. 2 instruction sheets, and a warranty card complete the kit. The My Book is about the size of a bible one finds in hotel and motel rooms.

Quiet, lots of storage, good price
The drive runs very quiet. It powers itself off at times of inactivity. The transfer speed is decent, can't ask for much more from a backup drive. The price is reasonable. It also comes with simple backup software right on the HD.
The only minor issues I have are 1) the included mini-usb cable is about 3 feet long, and 2) when your PC is not shut off, the drive still has its light on even though it's sleeping. This light is very bright in a small room at night. Other than that, it's v...

Reliable Home Backup
I have recently bought two portable drives: 1) Western Digital WDME1600TN My Passport Essential 160GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive (Midnight Black) and 2) Western Digital My Passport Essential 250GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive (Intense Blue).
I was impressed with the reliability of the portables. I have no problems with them but I was still running out of space. So I wanted to purchase another external drive.
I wanted to try other brands that I've used before. Seagate and Ma...

Good Hard Drive
This is my fourth Western Digital USB external hard drive. I am obviously happy with the product to be a repeat customer. The slightly lower score I have given it on performance is that two of the four hard drives have died after about two years of use.Having a TB of storage available is nice but have a backup because hard drives do die. My experience with this type of drive has been that after two years of hard use you are on borrowed time. I am hoping that the newer drives will have a long...

Good external HD, but use ONLY for backup/data storage
I've been using Western Digital HD's for nearly 15 years now and never yet have had one of them fail on me (though there's always a first time!) I currently own two of these My Book 500GB external drives which I have hooked up to my newest system. These drives are attractively designed, quite sleek with good ventilation and very easy to set up; the only things you need to do are (1) plug in the power adapter and connect it to a suitable socket and (2) connect the USB cable to the computer; Wind...

V2.0 Replaces The Old Series
Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 day to 1 week Pros: Price, storage space, looks reasonably stylish, XP found it and configured it easily and quickly.
Cons: Unknown longevity record (the original series had high failure rates), short warranty. Less common USB mini plug, no power switch
Other Thoughts: V2.0 replaces the original Essential series. No power switch, but the most recently produced v1 versions drop...

AWESOME HARD DRIVE!
I dont know what everyone is complaining about so much it doesnt say anywhere in the description that this hard drive has triple interface. Personally I only use the USB so I would have no need for a triple interface. Ive already filled this thinghalf full and it keeps on performing FLAWLESSLY. I got this for $200 on Black Friday but this thing is a steal even at $280. Trust me you will not be disappointed!!! Just a warning as you probably already know it only has about 930GB of useable sto...
