Not for me.
Tech Level: somewhat high Ownership: 1 day to 1 week This user purchased this item from Newegg Pros: Its a WD. Good price when I bought it. 3-yr warranty. User-serviceable.
Cons: Incredibly noisy fan - louder than any of my friends home built computers, which is saying something. You can only choose between RAID 0 or 1 - you can't mount the drives independently. So you're stuck with a redundant 750GB array or RAID 0 on a ...

Western Digital My Book Pro Edition II
Western Digital WDG2TP20000N My Book Pro Edition II 2 TB USB2.0/Firewire RAID Triple Interface External Hard Drive This provides tons of storage for a reasonable price. It was easy to set-up on a Mac using Leopard OS. RAID alternatives were easy to understand and select.

Unreliable and unresponsive
I ordered this drive because it was so cheap, and I couldn't find any other external RAID 1 solution with similar prices. When I first got it, it worked flawlessly as I formatted it and loaded over 500GB of data on it.
However, when I came to use it, I found out it likes to go into hibernation mode very quickly. It goes offline and cannot be accessed through my laptop PC in any way. This has crashed the software I was using to work on the drive (such as DJ software, audio production ...

Very flaky performance under USB 2.0 in Windows XP
This device constantly goes offline and can take many frustrating power cycles to bring it back to life. WD support has been responsive, but my issue is still not fully resoloved after 1 RMA and many many emails.
When it works, its beautiful, but for primary storage to be not reliable is not something I am willing to take. Finally got a firewire 800 card for it 1 day ago, and it has been stable since then. If you google "WD My Pro II sucks", you will see many others have had similar i...

this hard drive rules
After searching for quite some time for a hard drive, this is what I found. Every low priced hard drive will have reviews stating "this is the best hard drive in the world," and, "this POS crashed 30 seconds after I loaded my irreplaceable data on it."
THIS hard drive, set up in a RAID configuration, pretty much eliminates your worries about losing your precious data. I am a professional photographer, and cannot afford to lose my images. It is highly unlikely that BOTH hardrives wi...

Loudest. Fan. Ever.
While the storage capacity and connection options are great, the fan noise makes this unit unusable in any working environment except perhaps on an airport runway where the jet-engine-like sound would go unnoticed. Sadly, this is no exaggeration. The unit is that loud. I would only recommend using this in a cooled and sound-proofed media closet. After less than three weeks, I am ready to move on to something else. Does anyone have a recommendation for a quieter alternative?

Worthless, absolutely worthless drive
I've owned this drive for about a year now, and I'm about to throw it in the trash, where it belongs.
I'm using it with Windows Vista with SP1. About once a day, the drive goes into overdrive mode. The fan spins up to full speed for about 15 minutes, then the drive shuts down (presumably from overheating).
The strange thing is that the "overdrive" mode starts even when the drive isn't being accessed particularly. It just decides it needs to cool down, and the noisy fan figh...

Tech Level: somewhat high Ownership: 1 day to 1 week This user purchased this item from Newegg Pros: easy to install, Mac ready. Great sale price. Fast transfer rate, using firewire 400. Quiet harddrives.
Cons: The fan noise is slightly noticeable, but not annoying. I feel safer using an external drive with a cooling fan. I've had other ext drives fail with no cooling device, with only a heat sink.

Extremely fast and reliable drive
I ordered this drive a few months ago when it was on sale for well under 300 dollars. There's a firmware update that's available if its noise bothers you. So far it's provided reliable service using both USB and firewire.

Painfully slow!
Tech Level: somewhat high Ownership: 1 month to 1 year Pros: Cost, easy to use interface (if your OS supports it) Can access from anywhere via mionet.
Cons: Limited raid support, unbearably slow transfer rates and response times. The slow transfer rate is a common complaint. Just google it. Mionet software is not supported by Windows XP x64 or Windows Vista x64.
Other Thoughts: Windows Vista has been out for...
