Very nice 320GB per platter drive
Tech Level: high Ownership: less than 1 day This user purchased this item from Newegg Pros: I finished running Western Digital's drive diagnostics utilities and it reported no errors.
One thing I noticed was that it took 1.5 hours to scan this 640GB drive while ii took me 2 hours to scan my WD SE16 500GB drive. Right off the bat, it seems like this drive is faster.
I found a free utility called HD-Tach and run some basic test in the trial ...

320GB per platter
Tech Level: high Ownership: less than 1 day This user purchased this item from Newegg Pros: High performance, very quiet.
Cons: No history, hard to say what reliabilty will be.
Other Thoughts: WD's 2 platter design using their new 320GB/platters. HD Tach measured average transfer rate reflects the high-density platters with a rate of close to 91MB/s. Exceptional...better than a Raptor. (But of ...

WD 500GB Caviar
This review is from: Western Digital Caviar Blue 500 GB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 3.5 Inch, 16 MB Cache, 7200 RPM SATA II WD5000AAKS (Electronics) I got this in desperation when I needed a disc drive for my G5. It has been months. Not a hiccup. It is very fast. Noticeably faster than the stock 160. And it is very quiet. It has increased my system speed and gives lots of room for expansion. I am impressed. Update January 2009. This drive is still...

Dense 320GB platters
Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 week to 1 month This user purchased this item from Newegg Pros: FAST, QUIET, & COOL. Bought 4 of these to replace my 4x250GB array, and the WD640GB's are literally TWICE as fast and silent. Old drives would average a temp of 105; WD640 drives are averaging at about 96F (using hddtemp). My benchmarks (hdparm, bonnie++,zcav) show that the fastest of my batch of drives reads at an amazing max 119M...

Fastest 7200RPM HDD around!
Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 week to 1 month This user purchased this item from Newegg Pros: How does 85-90MBps read/write sound to you... in a single 7200RPM SATA drive? Hard to find a complaint there.
Cons: I seriously have no issues with this drive.
Other Thoughts: This baby kicks! Don't waste money on a 150GB 10000RPM raptor when this drive does just about everything it does for less money ...

RE: Decent Buy BUT Beware!
Tech Level: average Ownership: 1 day to 1 week Pros: see other
Cons: see other
Other Thoughts: I am not one to use this area as a forum but I just had to say something this time. To the person who gave this HDD 3 stars because it didn't come with a SATA cable...IT"S OEM! It's not suppose to come with anything but the drive itself.
Some of you people are as lame as lame can be. For instance th...

Watch for the firmware version
Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 day to 1 week This user purchased this item from Newegg Pros: It's a good hard drive according to reviews.
Cons: Different firmwares have different performance. Easily get confused.
Other Thoughts: This module from WD has at least 4 firmwares, starting with 22, 00, 75, 65. Firmware 22 is the latest one, has the best overall performance, and runs more silent and cooler than prev...

Speed
Tech Level: somewhat high Ownership: 1 day to 1 week This user purchased this item from Newegg Pros: Large capacity, fast read and write speeds. It takes about 10 secs. to copy a 700 MB movie file to a WD7500AAKS.
Cons: Newegg lowered the price 3 days after I bought it...
Other Thoughts: This drive has 597GB capacity formatted. HD tach rates this drive (WD6400AAKS) with 94MB/sec read, 240MB/sec ...

Just the drive, ma'am...
This review is from: Western Digital Caviar Blue 500 GB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 3.5 Inch, 16 MB Cache, 7200 RPM SATA II WD5000AAKS (Electronics) As M. Mola points out, this is an OEM package. It not only has no instructions or software, it also does not have a connector cable, an IDE four-pin to SATA power adapter, or mounting screws.
If you want to replace a failed drive and don't want the clutter that usually comes with a drive, this is for you.
If you w...

Western Digital 640GB Caviar SATA Hard Drive
I build computers as a hobby. Why pay for someone else to build one (one size fits does not fit all) when building your own is not too difficult and you can build with quality parts tailored to your own specific needs. Case in point, the WD 640GB HDD. Large hard drive prices are economical right now. Generally speaking, the larger the drive, the less the cost per gigabyte (GB). At Amazon's prices the WD 640GB drive was about $10 bucks more than the WD Caviar 16 320 GB drive with the same ca...
