Great Drive!
This review is from: Western Digital 1.5 TB Caviar Green SATA Intellipower 32 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive WD15EADS (Electronics) These drives work great and are a fraction of the cost of WD's flagship 2TB drive. You are getting the same great drive for a much cheaper price.
These drives run extremely quiet and cool. I ordered two of these for use in RAID 1 and enabled them for TLER using Western Digitals WDTLER tool, they now support Time Limited Error R...

Excellent drive, excellent price
I bought one and have it running quite nicely in my Windows Home Server. The drive is definitely quiet. Speed? It runs fine. This is not an OS drive. It's more of a storage drive. If you're looking for speed, look outside the "Green" line. If you're looking for storage, and a great price, then the "Green" line is the best choice.
I read plenty of feedback before making this purchase. The EACS got mixed reviews. However, everywhere I read, the EADS, which replaces the EACS, ...

May be the "green" drive to get right now
If you're looking for a low power drive, the Western Digital WD10EADS is one of the best options currently. It has by far the lowest idle and active power consumption statistics. That, not surprisingly, helps it run cooler than other drives as well.
There is some performance loss, though most users will probably not notice. For detailed stats, look up the Winter 2008 Hard Drive Guide at Tom's Hardware. (Though you may notice how quiet and cool it is!)
Also, note that th...

Eco-Friendly Option for Computer AND external drives!
WD engineering continues to impress me and I've been in the IT business for 20+ years as an engineer on all levels. When used in an Apple computer these drives impress with the hardware and OS ability to control the drive for increased performance. Some PC's are being built with this capability as well, but even without it the on-board processor performs fantastic. I would however not recommend this drive in a server due to it's variable spindle speed.
In an external enclosure SATA II...

Why you need this drive
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) For those that don't know why you want a low-power drive: It's not just for the environment or your electricity bill--those are just added bonuses. A hard drive can generate a lot of heat inside of your system. This means that (a) your fans will have to blow faster (and thus your computer gets significantly louder), but also that the rest of your computer (CPU, graphics card, etc) ...

Excellent
Tech Level: somewhat high Ownership: 1 week to 1 month This user purchased this item from Newegg Pros: Read reviews at places like Tom's Hardware. Almost as fast as the non-green drives, but very energy efficient. Perfect for a HTPC, which is where I put mine.
Avoid the WD10DEACS, which is the previous edition of this drive, which happens to have much worse performance.
Cons: Just remember it is an OEM drive, so scrape up...

Very quiet drive. Low power.
Bought this drive for my home theater PC based on the positive review on Toms Hardware. I don't have the gear to measure the power consumption, but Tom's says it's lower than the previous drives of this series.
The drive is certainly very quiet. I can't hear it over the power supply fan which itself is pretty quiet.
Performance is also good, as expected.
Recommended.

Nice drive for the price
Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 day to 1 week This user purchased this item from Newegg Pros: Quiet, Low cost
Cons: Could be a bit faster on data transfer rate but still very adequate for a budget drive
Other Thoughts: Very nice quiet drive for low price. Data transfer rates on benchmark tests (Windows XP): sequential read about 86 Mb/sec, random read about 35 Mb/sec - could be better but stil...

QUIET
Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 day to 1 week This user purchased this item from Newegg Pros: I've never in my life had such a quiet hard drive. In addition, it has a 32MB cache which is good for a low-power drive.
If you're looking for performance go with the Caviar Black for a bit more money. If you want cheap or quiet storage and performance isn't your main concern I would definitely recommend this drive!
