Beware - My Book drives fail if left on 24/7
This review is from: Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 500 GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive WDH1U5000N (Personal Computers) I'm an experienced computer technician with 20+ years of on the job experience. I am a firm supporter of Western Digital internal drives, and have always used them. When the My Book drives were released several years ago, I was enthusiastic that a low-cost external drive solution was available from my preferred hard drive vendor.
After y...

Fantastic External Hard Drive
pI purchased the WDH1U3200N hard drive a month ago as the final component of the computer that I just built. I have to say that I love it. I bought it on sale at Circuit City for $100 plus tax and its worth every penny and more. pbrbrbrpPros Thedrive turns itself off with your computer and the 320 gigabyte storage is enough for most user needs today. The drive can be unhooked and placed in a safe or fireproof vault when not in use. Its just as portable as the 160 WD Passport and has twiceth...

Reliable Home Backup
I have recently bought two portable drives: 1) Western Digital WDME1600TN My Passport Essential 160GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive (Midnight Black) and 2) Western Digital My Passport Essential 250GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive (Intense Blue).
I was impressed with the reliability of the portables. I have no problems with them but I was still running out of space. So I wanted to purchase another external drive.
I wanted to try other brands that I've used before. Seagate and Ma...

Great Hard Drive, Great Price
I have had this for over three weeks now, and the hard drive is great. No set up, at all. No disk to put in or anything. Just plug it in and your ready to go. It has some free trial software that comes with it, but I recomend not installing it and just backing up manually or using an anti virus program.
Also, I have a Dish HD DVR and I was able to use this hard drive to expand the storage space of my cable box. This was really worth the money.
I have this hard drive in a sa...

Works great!!
I use it mainly to store data music and videos. I like that fact that I just plugged it in and once my PC recognized it I was good to go. I have had thus far no issues with performance. I recommend these products to my family friends as well as clients. I will purchase a second one.

Good external HD, but use ONLY for backup/data storage
I've been using Western Digital HD's for nearly 15 years now and never yet have had one of them fail on me (though there's always a first time!) I currently own two of these My Book 500GB external drives which I have hooked up to my newest system. These drives are attractively designed, quite sleek with good ventilation and very easy to set up; the only things you need to do are (1) plug in the power adapter and connect it to a suitable socket and (2) connect the USB cable to the computer; Wind...

Great Product! Tons of Storage...
I did some research and almost bought a similar external HDD from an online retailer. One MAJOR difference is that this product turns itself off with the PC. brbrI recently purchased an APC UPS from Circuit City that will shut down my pc in the event ofpower loss. With some other External Hard Drives there is a separate power switch to contend with. Now when my PC is powered down this gets powered down.brbrInstallation was a breeze - just plug and play its that simple. For the very modest pr...

Works great for me!
This is the 3rdth Western Digital external hard drive Ive purchased. I use mine a bit different. Turn them on when I need to save or retrieve something. Then turn them off after Ive used them too. Have used my external drives this way for 3 years and none have crashed. I figure if it runs 2 47 Im asking for a crash. Bought everyone when they were on sale too. Have other brands of externals I use the same way with no problems. I duplicate everything on two at a time. If one crashes I have my back...

The New Western Digital MyBook 320 GB - Nice Looking, Nice Performing External HD
Western Digital 320 GB MyBook Essential 2.0 External Hard Drive (WDH1U3200N)
I got this new Western Digital MyBook 320 GB drive because I've had good luck with several other models and I wanted to step up in size. The performance is on par with other MyBook drives, but as capacity increases more people will want to step up to a version with faster FireWire connections. In addition, you have to watch the price as higher capacity drives sometimes go on sale before this one.

Nice unit but disappointing
Had my WD 320 for a year now and found it very easy to install and use but disappointed becaues the hard drive went out less than 30 days after the 1 year 12month warrenty was up.
