Cheap, small, huge storage!
I stopped using Iomega products several years ago (remember the infamous "click of death" infesting Iomega Zip drives?) But after reading the Amazon reviews, I decided to get the Iomega 1TB drive.
It is about half the size of my old 350 MB Maxtor hard drives, costs half as much, and has three times the storage capacity! I plugged it in and Windows XP had it up and running in seconds, no fuss.
As a test, I transferred two gigs of photos (I'm a photojournalist) and it backed ...

I guess I'm "that guy" who writes an unfavorable review on a much loved product
This is my first review. I bought this product based on the Amazon reviews so I feel obligated to return the favor.
I am a graphic designer, itunes addict, and Mac user. I have owned many, many ext hard drives over the years. I run my itunes off ext hard drives, save my graphic work and back it all up on another ext hard drive. It's the way I roll. When my wonderful Seagate 200 gig was just too small I decided to upgrade to a 1 tera. I should have bought another Seagate but the revie...

NOT RELIABLE!!!!!!!!!!
I received the HD, it worked good for a week. I backed up all of my media including family pics that have not yet been burnt to CD. The next week it died!!! I got on with the web chat customer service and their only solution was to send it back in to get another (more than likely a refurb). I asked about recovering my data and i was told ya we will do it for you but it will cost you. I said screw that, I took the HD out of the case and tested it myself. The HD was fine, it was the base that was ...

Spend the extra money on a quality HD
I bought the iomega Prestige 500 GB hard drive because of its low price. Now I wish I had spent a little more money on a quality hard drive. I gave this as a gift to my son on Christmas so that he could store all of his purchased music, audio books, pictures, etc. On January 9th, I had to contact Amazon for a return. The drive makes a grinding noise each time it is turned on and all of my son's data is irretrievable. When the drive does show up in Windows, any attempt to access the data on it re...

Reasonable unit; didn't need the backup software
Connecting the external drive to the PC went without issue - since it's plug-and-play compatible, I was able to use the drive without any configuration issues. As for the downloadable 'backup' software, I tried it but wasn't impressed. Even through USB 2.0, the speed wasn't good. The backup process doesn't perform any real-time verification during the process, so after the backups are complete, you have to wait for an additional time to verify the backup. Since I've got the O/S installation ...

Warranty Problems
It was cheap, and the comments on Amazon convinced me to buy it.
Please read the following problems I encountered before you purchase this.
-USB is notably slower than firewire for transfering large files (Photographers, Video, Media) It is also slow to read from the hard-drive when working directly.
-Iomega costumer service is HORRIBLE!!!! THEY WANT TO CHARGE $25 BEFORE YOU CAN SPEAK WITH SOMEONE ABOUT ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!! I wanted to ask for warranty since m...

Some things to consider
A few things to consider when buying this drive.
First, unlike many externals on the market, this one does not use the USB port for power. You must plug in a wall wart. That's OK with me, since my house current is more reliable and predictable than USB power, but be advised. The ON/OFF switch is a nice feature. It is quiet.
Second, about the "free" software: It's not free; nothing is. THe cost is built in to the price of the hardware. Whether you elect to use it i...

Great Value
I plugged it into the USB port on my laptop and it was ready to go. My primary use is to consolidate and backup data from multiple computers and this has plenty of room for music and photos.
This is an excellent value considering I just paid $75 for a 16gig scan disk. It is well built and doesn't have a very large desktop footprint.
This drive is a little to large to lug around every day so I wouldn't consider it portable, but other drives fill that role.

Not as compatible as advertised
I tried three different disks (three of Iomega 500gb USB, not three different kinds) on my various Macs and obtained varying results on my different Mac computers. Once plugged in, most times the computer did not find the disk. It would start to spin, then stop. Other times, the disk icon appeared for a while then disappeared. One disk did not work with my brand new macbook pro. The other two did and they allowed me to format them appropriately. When I plugged them into my P5 iMacs with Leop...

Excellent Hard Drive
As the past reviewer stated I was worried about buying another iomega product from suffering the "click" of death years ago from there zip drives. I have had tons of problems with Western Digital externals. They always seem to fail after like 6months. Hopefully this isn't the case with the iomega. I have owned this one for about 1 month have 300gb of HD movies on it. Works like a champ. I would recommend this product looking for 1 TB and small good looking well made hard drive; the drive is all ...
