Works well; meets expectations
I bought this hard drive for use with my laptop that I recent got for the start of college. I needed an external drive to supplement my laptop's 80GB drive, and I went with this Iogear hard drive mostly because of its low price. The added bonus is that it looks pretty slick.
Be careful about size, and make sure you realize that it'll be about eight inches high and two wide, if space is a big concern. It doesn't get too hot, and it works well, though I think the "Tri-Select" function...

Silent @ works fine
Tech Level: Ownership: This user purchased this item from Newegg Comments: Bought this after extensive research. It's true, as some other reviewer observed elsewhere, that the drive is split in 5, so there's "only" about 30GB for each drive, but that's still more than enough. I actually like this, because it allows me to have one drive for music, one for docs, one for photos etc. And 30GB should also be enough to back up anyone's pro...

Iogear's support department is terrible.
I bought this drive brand new from newegg.com. When I received the drive, it was partitioned into 5 seperate drives. It is entirely pointless for it to come like this from the factory. If anything, just confusing. I attempted to partition it back down to one, which in doing so, the drive got stuck & would not finish the partition. I shut it off, and when powered back up, only 1 disk image mounted. okay, i thought... to be safe, I ran a repair disk utility & evrything seemed to check out.....

Died within 3 hours of opening
I purchased this drive mainly because after rebate it seemed like a good value for a drive that supported USB2 and Firewire.
However soon after opening the box, I regretted my purchase.
First off, the drive is massive, easily 150% of the size of most other external drives, and given its shape and configuration it is not suitable for being placed horizontally. If that doesn't bother you, as soon as I plugged the drive in, I found that the drive came in 5 partitions, Each about 32GB. ...

Wonderful backup system
I purchased this drive about 4 months ago, after having researched many backup system drive/software combinations, and have no complaints. It is sleek, fast, quiet, and works flawlessly with Retrospect 6.5. With one touch of a button on the harddrive I can backup all my data files as a progressive backup (only copies over new files), or backup my entire OS. Moreover, I can select specifically from which folders I want to backup, and can even backup all data on my desktop.
I haven't tried to rei...

Had a few problems...
Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 month to 1 year Pros: Great capacity, fairly inexpensive, stylish design
Cons: Crashed twice in one week...
Other Thoughts: I bought this to pair up with my laptop for college. I was amazed at the price. Worked fairly well, but for some odd reason, the hard drive has had problems any time I get over 10 GB of data on any particular partition. I had to reformat twice in one week, and l...

No problems, reliable and flexable...
The partitioning thing that everyone is "complaining" about is due to the fact that some operating systems work better with one file format than another... and these file formats put limits on how large a hard drive (partition) can be, so Iogear thought ahead and formatted them to what they thought were their biggest audience at the time... you CAN always reformat the drive into however many partitions you want (as long as your computer will be able to use that size partition).
I fo...

Appears to Overheat
Owned this item for greater than a year... decided to backup my Mac G3-400 so I unhooked from my wife's E-Mac and brought it over to the G3-400. Backup went fine, but seemed very slow for Firewire. Had to allow to run overnight.
Next morning, I re-installed back on my wife's E-Mac and the drive would not appear. Shut everything down, rebooted and still nothing. Unhooked and re-installed back on my G3-400 and same result - no drives. Seems to have power (all 3 light on front of the ...

External Harddrive with auto software
This product was defective. The company, Iogear was very unhelpful. If there was a rating less than a star I would give it. I would give the company a rating lower than the product. Although the product is sold for Mac OS X the software will not work with it. Told the engineers are working on it ( the product has been out for two years). The harddrive itself was either preused or defective. Tiger, the direct seller was very nice, but I had to pay for shipping both ways, so would not order...

Revised Review
Tech Level: somewhat high Ownership: more than 1 year Pros: Good storage capacity, fast, fairly portable, pretty quiet
Cons: Firewire??? I used the firewire port on this thing for a few months...I had to reformat one or two of the partitions every week, literally.
Other Thoughts: Don't use Firewire with this drive. I had a pcmcia firewire card for my laptop, and it just messed the whole thing up. ...
