Iogear's support department is terrible.
I bought this drive brand new from newegg.com. When I received the drive, it was partitioned into 5 seperate drives. It is entirely pointless for it to come like this from the factory. If anything, just confusing. I attempted to partition it back down to one, which in doing so, the drive got stuck & would not finish the partition. I shut it off, and when powered back up, only 1 disk image mounted. okay, i thought... to be safe, I ran a repair disk utility & evrything seemed to check out.....

No problems, reliable and flexable...
The partitioning thing that everyone is "complaining" about is due to the fact that some operating systems work better with one file format than another... and these file formats put limits on how large a hard drive (partition) can be, so Iogear thought ahead and formatted them to what they thought were their biggest audience at the time... you CAN always reformat the drive into however many partitions you want (as long as your computer will be able to use that size partition).

Appears to Overheat
Owned this item for greater than a year... decided to backup my Mac G3-400 so I unhooked from my wife's E-Mac and brought it over to the G3-400. Backup went fine, but seemed very slow for Firewire. Had to allow to run overnight.
Next morning, I re-installed back on my wife's E-Mac and the drive would not appear. Shut everything down, rebooted and still nothing. Unhooked and re-installed back on my G3-400 and same result - no drives. Seems to have power (all 3 light on front of the ...

Tech Level: somewhat high
Ownership: more than 1 year
Pros: Good storage capacity, fast, fairly portable, pretty quiet
Cons: Firewire??? I used the firewire port on this thing for a few months...I had to reformat one or two of the partitions every week, literally.
Other Thoughts: Don't use Firewire with this drive. I had a pcmcia firewire card for my laptop, and it just messed the whole thing up. ...

External Harddrive with auto software
This product was defective. The company, Iogear was very unhelpful. If there was a rating less than a star I would give it. I would give the company a rating lower than the product. Although the product is sold for Mac OS X the software will not work with it. Told the engineers are working on it ( the product has been out for two years). The harddrive itself was either preused or defective. Tiger, the direct seller was very nice, but I had to pay for shipping both ways, so would not order...
