a disaster one month at a time
Upon receipt it was dead, after a mixture of e-mailes and phone calls it was determined I needed to use 2 USB cables to power the drive. Since I only have 2 on my laptop, I cant print from the drive. after transfering 10 gig of pictures and 13 gig of mp3's the unit failed the next month. Again emails and phone calls determined my laptop did not have enough power to run the drive. The solution was an AC adapter.....great for a "portable USB drive" They said an AC adaptor would be sent...no adapt...

IOGEAR 40GB? USB POWERED?
I bought this item because I needed a portable, easy to connect and use, external hard drive. When I opened the box and installed the hard drive, I realized two things
1.- The unit was not 40GB but 37GB actual space.
2.- The unit needs two USB ports to actually work, one to be able to transfer info and another usb port to power the unit. In the picture they show only one cable and even in the documentation they never say you need two cables, they only show one. Not even the pa...

Answer to some questions
1. This drive does work on a *single* USB connection *if* enough power is supplied by the computer to the port. In my experience, this worked on a Mac Mini but not on a an aluminum PowerBook 12"; for the latter I had to use the supplied cord that has a USB (or serial) connector on one end and the tip that goes into power port of the drive on the other end. This gives enough "juice" for the drive to spin up. It is unfortunate that this requires the use of both USB ports on a PB. On the other hand...

Excellent drive for general file transport
I've been using several of these for over a year. These drives are offered in several sizes as well as just the housing to build your own. The housing is far more heavy duty than 99% of the portable and/or build your own units available. You could probably stand on it. The other reviewers here are dead wrong. You'd have to be a idiot to break the USB port. Also as anyone knows a 40g drive is 37gigaBYTES because there are 1024 bytes in a kilobyte, not 1000. Only the single USB connection is requi...

It is not that bad.
I bought one similar 20G external HD in 2004.
At first it worked fine, later it showed the same problems as mentioned in previous posts by other people. There was noise from the i/o operation and it was painfully slow.
Sometimes just cannot open any folder.
I returned it twice and got it back without any change and without any explanations except a sheet saying nothing was wrong.
Later I figured out that for some desktops if I plugged the usb cable to the ba...

Avoid this product if you care about your data!
I bought this portable hard-drive to back-up my important files. Three months later the USB connection broke and now I can't access my files. COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY!!!!
I guess I need a back-up for my back-up. This is a piece of junk. I cannot describe how disappointed I am at this product. I will never, ever, buy an IOGEAR product again.

Great Idea...Poor Excecution
I purchased one a couple of months back. It works off of the USB ports on every desktop type PC that I have hooked it to. It will power up on most newer laptops. It does not power up off of my older Toshiba Satellite (circa Pentium II 700MHZ). There is a 5 volt DC input on the unit for this possibility, but that sort of takes some of fun away from its sleek and portable design. It transfers or stores files quickly and quietly, but only when it is not broken.
NOW FOR THE REST OF THE STORY. ...

USB port broke after 3 weeks
This is a very sleek unit that offers a wonderful functional experience -- while it's working. I loved it until I noticed that the USB port was broken and rattling around inside the unit. Now it's a paperweight. I am waiting for a reply from IOGEAR on how they intend to repair it.
I will write another review based on this experience. But I can say in all honesty that the product is fragile in design and probably shouldn't be carried around even in a laptop bag.

great drive
Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 week to 1 month This user purchased this item from Newegg Pros: I'm very pleased with this drive-- it's the most manageable 40 GB I've ever used. Power handled via the USB port, so no second-cord hassle. The size is great; even fits into pants pocket.
