Best Starter DSLR
Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 month to 1 year Pros: This is a great camera and a huge step up from point and shoot. If you think your point and shoot pics are good and want to move to the next level but don't want to spend over $1K, this is a great camera to start with. Big plus is its light weight and smaller size than some of the pro DSLR's. Thus it's not bulky. It takes great pics, especially landscape, and as one reviewer said, I still don...

Great Camera - Good Price
Tech Level: somewhat high Ownership: 1 week to 1 month This user purchased this item from Newegg Pros: Easy to use; takes great pics; auto ISO/auto contrast settings work extremely well; light weight; very accurate, very bright 2.5" LCD; excellent kit lens; good battery life; great price
Cons: Light meter is off but you can compensate by adjusting the exposure setting.
Other Thoughts:...

Nikon D40
Tech Level: average Ownership: 1 week to 1 month Pros: Awesome pictures, even with the kit lens. I am not a Professional Photographer, but I have been using a very good P&S for a while, and this camera puts it to shame. Keep in mind, I really do like my P&S camera.
Cons: Nikon uses a proprietary RAW format (*.NEF), and requires you to use a program tha that supports this format, or you have to download the codec from th...

Great DSLR
Tech Level: high Ownership: 1 month to 1 year Pros: Battery life, Resolution , Color balance, low light performance, start up speed, no shutter lag.
Cons: Auto white balance works most of the time. The autofocus tended to "Hunt" sometimes.
Other Thoughts: I am an old Nikon film camera guy, Nikon F, F2, and FM2. My digital expirience was Canon A95 and G6. I have heard all the bad things about the D40 and I ca...

Great little camera
Tech Level: somewhat high Ownership: 1 month to 1 year Pros: Great entry level DSLR camera. Image quality is excellent and controls are well thought out.
Cons: 1. Light metering is generally horrible if you use auto mode (a standard complaint of this camera). The highlights tend to be blown out. If you operate the camera in program mode and set the exposure compensation to -2/3 (setting depends on lighting conditions), ...

Great for traveling
I bought this camera in preparation for a sightseeing trip I took to China. I've never owned a camera before and it was **easy for me to use** this one. I still have to learn how to use the manual settings, but it **took some really good pictures** even just on the auto and no-flash settings. The pictures looked so nice that several people on the trip with me who saw how the pictures looked asked me to burn a cd for them even though they were taking their own pictures with their own digital came...

Great deal but...
Tech Level: average Ownership: 1 month to 1 year Pros: It is a great camera that is easy to use. The battery life is fantastic and the range of lenses you can purchase is impressive.
Cons: I bought a recertified D40X and it would not work after 3 days. It kept saying that the battery was low even though it wasn't. I bought a new battery and got the same results. I had to send it back and the return took forever. I asked for anothe...

Excellent for SLR beginners or pros needing a 2nd camera.
Tech Level: somewhat high Ownership: 1 month to 1 year Pros: Reasonable price for what is probably the lowest end DSLR you can purchase. Excellent image quality for the sensor size. The 6.1 MegaPixels are more than good enough for prints and web use. Great starter camera for amatuers who are tired of P&S cameras. Simple to use, plenty of full-auto and semi-auto modes as well as full manual modes. 1600 ISO looks good. Takes SDHC cards which can be as big as 32...
