Not quite the good bargain I wanted.
First, I got this from Target for about $50, I think.
Second, I have some older Chinese video-cd's that I was hoping to watch, well... That's not really working. It says it supports the format, but I find that they cannot be viewed, or are so if-fy in their playback (skip chapters, TRIPLE background sounds and LOWERS voice volume, completely unreadable sometimes).
Now, the hard part. I just learned this includes only a 3-MONTH warranty from Philips. Mine just failed to pow...

Great! It can play dvds from any region!!!
I only received this DVD player two weeks ago and I love it! Great quality, lots of features for the price, easy to set it up. I haven't had a DVD player before, so I am a first timer and it is very easy for me to use it! ...and it was very easy to figure out how to use the features too.
I bought this DVD mainly to play Region 2 (Hungarian) dvds and American ones too. I wanted it to be region free or at least to be able to play region 2.
I've googled it and what I've find was this:...

Good basic region-free format-converting player
This was one of the earliest units to satisfy two basic needs for owners of DVDs purchased from multiple countries. It offers multi-region capabilities (not quite out-of-the-box, but easy to set up even though I notice that some reviewers failed to do it) and it converts PAL DVDs to NTSC and vice versa. I own about one hundred DVDs from Italy and they all play fine. I have a multi-system TV so I was able to compare the unconverted PAL output with the converted NTSC output and they are indisti...

Fix for the "no disc" problem
Apart from not being able to play DVD's after a few months, this player is great. I'd give it five stars if I could've gotten some info other than "send us money and we'll send you another player" from the manufacturer. Philips customer service being no help, I looked around until I found this on another forum, and it worked great for me:

Excellent compatibility
This player is awesome. Its played everything I've thrown at it, both DVD+R and -R discs, plenty of media formats (including DivX!), CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and audio CDs. (Not that I recommend using this for CD playback - get a real CD player!) Video quality is excellent - far better than the PS2s and cheap players some of my friends use.
It can be made region-0 or macrovision free (it might be out of the box?) very easily. I flashed it with the latest firmware, and the code given on videoh...

Absolutely NO EXCUSE Not To Have One, Folks.
Let's get this right out of the way: the whole schpiel about multi-region or region free/worldwide DVD players being "finnicky", "overpriced", "prone to failure", "impractical due to the inavailability of imports to watch in the first place" and "needing to be sent all the way to Malaysia to be repaired" is a myth perpetuated by Best Buy supervisors who have been indoctrinated to do one thing: Sell DVD players that only play the DVDs they sell in their stores. It's a bogus myth, and this player ...

I loved this DVD player -- In the end it broke my heart
I bought this player about 10 months ago and was very happy with it -- so much so that I highly recommended it to several friends. It seemed to play just about any format I threw at it.
Then, day before yesterday, the power light started blinking and the unit wouldn't eject or power on. After several attempts to cycle the power I started looking for help online. Apparently I'm not the only person experiencing this problem.
So now I'm in the market for a new DVD playe...

Watch movies from any region or country
I'm a Laurel and Hardy fan. Most of their sound films are available in England, but not in the U.S. You can order them on DVD from Amazon/UK, but unfortunately, films for the England region can not be played on conventional DVD players in America. This is for two reasons. 1. They use PAL encoding format which is incompatible with the US encoding format, NTSC. Second, they can't be played because discs from there are Region 2, and U.S. is Region 1. U.S. DVD players lock out discs from all other ...
