A Must Have If Your A DIvX,Xvid,WMV Fan
I have purchased a few DVD players by other manufactures that claim they can play all DivX files but this one by Philips is the best. I can't believe I am the first to review this product because it works like a charm. The USB input on the front of the player will accept a flash drive or an external hard drive as long as its formatted in fat32 if its over 32Gig in size. I am here to purchase another one, so I gotta go.

Great for playing off hard drive through USB 2.0 as well as many formats Divx, wmv
Just bought 3 of these 5992/37. There is an easy hack found on the internet to upgrade to play all regions dvd's.
Philips DVP 5992 Region Free:
press Setup select the Preference Tab Press 1,3,8,9,3,1 Press up/down key to select "0" and hit menu to exit.
Prior to this I had a 5982/37 which had 1.1 usb and I had some trouble with avi's at high bitrate through the USB 1.1 port but the 2.0 on the 5992 fixed that. Both players play divx...

Philips does it again
First, Amazon & VNCDirect: another item that arrived earlier than expected. Super service.
Philips, what can I say? It plays VCD's KvCD's, Divx etc. (for those that don't know, u can take an .avi file, burn it as data and watch it on here. I don't know if that works for other types of media files tho. Burning as data is very fast.) I live by Philips for being one of the few DVD players that can handle probably any type of disc thrown at it. I have a DVD movie that I brought and after ...

Good upconversion but bad disk operation
I bought this Phillips DVP5992/37 upconvert DVD player from Amazon 3 days ago after reading all those great reviews but now I am disappointed. It's a good DVD player to upcovert DVDs to 1080P when it works, however, the player is having frequent troubles reading VCDs and DVDs. It may successfully read and play once in while and next time it may get stuck on "Loading". Once this happens, both the remote control and the player's control buttons will completely cease to function. You can neit...

not as awesome as XBMC, chokes on H.264 AVC high
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Reads acceptable well from high quality USB flash drives like Corsair and Lexar.
NOT a suitable replacement for an xbox with Xbox Media Center.
NOT a front end for NAS.
*** Will NOT play x264 / H.264 videos. ***
Upscaling is nice if one has high quality HDMI cables.
There are many bugs with the most current firmware related to playba...

Was dead after one week...
That player is very nice, but it stopped to work after one week. First it lost one of the color in output signal and later it was dead completely. My friend have similar problem with the same model. His player lost one of the color on component output but still works great on HDMI output. But for how long? Philips customer support center made a replacement for me on warranty but they send me DVP5982 instead of DVP5992 because my model was out of stock...

Mine couldn't play a DVD to save it's life. That's the prob with not going to local Best Buy/Circuit City. Was this thing not tested at the factory?

Dead on Arrival
I just received this DVD player and its DOA out of the box. It turns on, it produces a video signal ( you can see the Philips screen and "loading" icon), but the DVD never loads. I called tech support and they said it was a lens alignment issue. I will return it for another one based on the majority of good reviews on this page. I am concerned that there is another DOA review on this product.
This is a very basic unit. It has few outputs - 3 component video, TV, audio L / R, Di...

Works as Described
The Philips DVP5992/37 works exactly as it is intended to work. Not a feature more, not a feature less. Overall it works as described in the product listing.
Pros: Lightweight unit, 1080p Upscaling Resolution with absolutely NO ghosting effects of image. Region free DVD playback with the use of a simple code found on the internet. USB 2.0 front port. HDMI jack on the rear. Low power consumption. Quiet DVD drive. Unit runs cool without needing loud fans to keep the internal temp in che...

A life saver
I held off writing a review on this to test its durability, since several people have complained. With that said, this product has worked wonderfully, not a single problem yet, and I have had it for about 7 months. Because I do not have cable, this player is used every single day to play both DVD's as well as off of an external hard drive. I have not yet found a format which is not supported, or one that gives any problems. I back up all of my DVD's onto a 1.5TB external HD, and it works perfect...
